Is anyone just giving Monday's launch a complete miss ?

Absolutely.

I expect the market will be flooded with 70's at less than release price by the Autumn. Not for for the 2&5 obviously, but all the others. Even at that I might not bother.

As mentioned, I think the SotD is the one that matters, and most of us already have one of those tucked away!

Genuinely wouldn't be surprised if the full sovereign is still available come next Friday.

As I'm still paying off coronation purchases, to save additional debt I think I'll just pick up a five sovereign in PF70 plastic coffin later in the year

Also if I'm reading the collective pulse of current collectors market I feel there's not a huge amount of love for Charles

I quite like this crowned portrait of Charlie, I think that it looks pretty good. Much better than the uncrowned version on the Britannia coins anyway...

I won't be rushing to get one, hopefully a bullion will appear, will get that..but I don't collect to flip as such so proofs hold no fascination for me,I like to handle and enjoy my gold.

I purchased a proof this morning and have refunded it this afternoon. Decided that I'm not too bothered about it as I have the SOTD and know that I'll be buying a few bullion versions too. I might pick up a slabbed proof if the prices later in the year still reflect the current demand.

Totally agree. Sheer greed.

Granted they churn out their fair share of tat, but no Mint in a similar position would do differently.
The Platinum Jubilee, death of the Queen and Coronation of the new King are truly historic events that warrant commemoration. A lot of these coins, and all of the Sovereigns, will be long term winners.

Yes the Jubilee / memorial and the coronation sovereigns will coins that are sought after years from now. When you think how much sets such as the 1937 4 coin coronation set is worth @20k in good nick, and there was 5 and half thousand of them. The current sets are a 5th of that.

Having said that RM is going to struggle now to keep sales going at anything like these levels, most of what is coming up is going to be mundane. Not everyone likes Sci-fi and Music legends with 2 first names 😜

I agree on both points.

But 'The Original Makers' play on a millennia of history and would have you believe they are special or even unique. Maybe in the past, but no more. They are nothing more than a poorly run outfit churning out as much as they can as quickly as they can with no care other than profit. Nowhere is this better seen than in the quality of product that they deem acceptable. In anything other than a monopoly they would have sunk long ago.

Recent events have been something of a bonanza for the Royal Mint and of course they are going to mark them. The sheer volume of coins they have produced somewhat dilutes any notion of being special in my opinion. I don't dispute that many will be winners, especially the sovereigns, but given that pretty much any Royal silver crown of the last 50 years can be picked up for 20 quid or less says to me that the current batch will fare no better.

I also accept @Allgoldcoins point about historic sets and their value, but none of them were sent off to NGC, conserved and slabbed as PF70. The proportion of the current sovereigns etc that will remain pristine makes that comparison slightly irrelevant I think.

For all that, I do appreciate the significance of the times we are in, and I have previously spoken positively about the recent sovereigns and their potential. I have bought the Jubilee, the Memorial and the SotD, and may well get the Coronation sovereign at some point in the future. This was a significant outlay for me, so obviously I think they were worth it.

Finally I think the RMs pricing is a smidge on the greedy side as well, particularly in the context of the volume they have produced.

The end!😀

LOL, what would you like?

What are your thoughts on the Royal Mint releasing bullion versions of the Jubilee, Memorial and Coronation Sovereigns?

Personally, I’m conflicted. While it’s nice that there are more affordable alternatives to the Proofs, they also make the entire range less special in a way.

I agree, Especially when you involve grading and you are seeing the ms70s fetching the same price as the pf70s

We need to bookmark and keep some of the doubters, moaners and naysayers comments and revisit them in 5,10 and 50 years time.

Holding onto any of these recent releases platinum jubilee, memorial or the coronation  or even better holding the full set for the long term

I don't see any downside risk personally as gold keeps creeping slowly higher with time

What releases have we got to look forward to now ongoing ?? Not very much really, maybe the next great engravers coin next year and that's it

Yes, I think everyone could do with a bit of a rest. Just the Monarchs to carry on with for me.

And even the latest Monarchs coin did not generate much excitement last week.

That’s the hope! 🙏🏼

One can’t tell with the Royal Mint though - they are likely to celebrate unlikely occasions and events just to push out more products.

A few that come to mind…

- The SotD Sovereigns for each of the first five birthdays of Prince George and a random one for the birth of Princess Charlotte; nothing for Prince Louise though.

- The 200th Anniversaries of the births of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

- The 200th Anniversary of the end of King George III’s reign (what even was this!?)

- The 75th Anniversaries of Victory in Europe and Victory over Japan.

🤦🏻‍♂️

You know I love you mate,    The 2018 SOTD Georges 5th Birthday is one of the best modern sovereigns of recent times and it's gone under the radar.   A unmilled proof (in every way except name)  George and the Dragon reverse  without a privy mark.....it's a gem of a coin!

The privy mark is a very cheap way to try and make a coin different and  can understand why some don't like them, however  any sovereign with a low mintage will appreciate given enough time.

I would love the RM to take a different stance, and make the coins subtly different, add a streamer to George or even a die number shield back for a run of SOTD's for a few years.

I wouldn't consider myself a doubter or a naysayer, on the contrary, I have spent money on the assumption that my outlay will do well in the future.

But I am a moaner!

Likewise my friend 🤗 And I have that 2018 SotD on my list of Sovereigns to acquire because it is indeed a quintessential Sovereign without any fluff.

I missed out on the SoTD due to the RM. I’ll be looking for one to complete the set. If anyone has a spare stuffed in the sock drawer ?

Mine is stuck somewhere in the UK (Langley!) since mid-May. If you can track it down for me, I’ll split it with you. 😜
