dicker reacted to SidS in New Year's Resolutions?
Stop running backwards and forwards to the silver buffet, buying stuff I don't need. Like Bruce Willis said to Arnold Schwarzenegger in Expendibles 2, "You've been back enough".
So I'll sort out my English monarchs set and then maybe, maybe buy some gold. There I've said it... and it hurt. 😉

Stick to the plan. Boring works. Don’t get distracted. Spread the spend and don’t buy too much in one go

I've a few.
1) most important is to only buy from already proven "to me" trusted members/sellers. nothing personal, but sometimes I feel like I'm in the twilight zone on here.
2) continue the Tudor beast's in both 1/4 and 1oz
3) get more sovereigns to add variety.
4) in-between times, I will ignore all of the above and do the opposite 😆

It's that time of year again!
Any resolutions for 2023, precious metal related of course!
I'll kick it off: No more modern coins from the Royal Mint. I stopped with the memorial sovereigns and the 2023 QE2 Britannias, and that's that. You have to draw a line somewhere eh?
I'm not stopping gold purchases however, I'll concentrate on improving my Britannia collection and perhaps pick up a few more 19thC half sovereigns.

dicker reacted to JJH in Coins of the realm auction…
good auction house and you can find them in fourm Official Sponsor's Sub
Has been consigned to auction many times and achieved good results,
Both buyers and sellers can win, no buyer fees, but sometimes the seller seems to have a very high reserve price

Douro Wreck Auction Catalogue.
Vast amounts of Sovs listed and a few nice photos. Bought because I am interested in the population of Sovs from the Douro (I know this is not all of them but is none the less interesting).

dicker got a reaction from Arganto in Intentional "X" mark
Firstly, the coin has a very odd tone to it.
Secondly the x appears to be raised - very odd.
There are what look like pop marks in the fields (where a coin is cast and air bubbles rise to the surface)
The date looks wrong in terms of the numerals
There is another oddity at the base of Liberty’s neck, which to my eye looks to have taken place at the time of manufacture. An M shaped chunk notch is evident
It’s also worth testing the weight and checking it is not magnetic.
A Morgan should weigh 26.73g. Even though yours is worn, it won’t be radically lighter.
There are other tests, but I suspect you will only need to weigh it and check with a magnet.
Best

dicker reacted to Faiz in Milking on silver
I’ve tried all sorts to prevent it, with little success. Temperature control, moisture control, the lot. It used to be the maples, the Britannias are just as bad, if not worse than the maples at milking now. My queen beasts collection is also affected to some degree. I can’t stand the site of the stains. I personally would not use a mechanical method to remove the stains, the scratches left behind are even more unsightly, bullion or no bullion. Hard earned cash has gone into buying them, so there should be no excuse for such poor quality. I’ve moved over to gold.

dicker reacted to ZRPMs in Ebay Silver Prices
Over the Christmas I've been going through a few bits checking them with the Sigma recently purchased from @Fadeingstar Happy to say all test ok. However. My brother has called today to check a few of his coins and rounds. Sadly he wasn't as lucky.
When testing some of his eBay purchases he found a fake. He did concede that, he had thought there might have been more going from his experience. He said its so hard trying to buy from eBay in confidence. No matter what questions you ask or how much you study feedback, pictures or even follow gut feelings. Something will sting you. He's still happy taking the risk and he will continue to use eBay but he was saying that he'll probably join the forum and perhaps transition to purchasing more from here.
For myself. I haven't bought off eBay for a long time. I just find it too nerve wrecking as there seems to be more and more fakes on there, I stopped when a friend bought a tube of koala's, all were fake. Good ones but fake. If it seems too good to be true. Most often, it is.

For security reasons, it could make sense to post one side of the coin one day, then post the other side once you know the first side has arrived safely!

dicker reacted to Britannia47 in Latest auction prices for 1989 Proof Sovereign
As you can see, your ‘Gillick’ has a helmet streamer, whilst your 2021 does not, and neither did the first image of this type 200 years ago in 1821. It was re instated later but disappeared in 2009. I doubt if St G has a pony-tail!
A proof sovereign generally has a frosted relief to give more detail, not less as you suggest. Your comparison photo may be giving you that impression owing to the shadow flattening the horses right flank. Recent bullion versions of the same image are usually too reflective to discern good detail. With a ‘Gillick’ you get the best of both worlds - a great looking coin. If you look carefully at the image again you should see the muscular upper torso of St G on the Proof. Pistrucci as an engraver was skilled in both human and equine anatomy and depicted it as such.
I am going to put up my Proof 1982 as an illustration.
