Not had any coins delivered in ages 🥲  But this turned up today a piece of craftsmanship.  Fiskars axe with a hickory handle.  Still working on my wood stack and I'm convinced it will out perform gold this year!

How do people like to store their coins. I tried display boxes but didn't like them. Now i just throw them in a box. I get more pleasure going through them. I forget what i have some times.

Interesting die-crack on this 1915 London Mint sovereign:

At least I think it's a die crack, but it is quite unusual. Most of the die cracks I see are on Victorian shield sovereigns, although I probably do not examine George V ones so closely.
This crack is not quite concentric with the rim and edge. It also has some small blobs on it, and it seems to veer inwards through the horse's tail.
I might be keeping this coin in our "Museum" because this die crack intrigues me.

As expected, the RM is going to release a Piedfort Sovereign this year, with the same Royal Coat of Arms design as the Proof Sovereign.

    You thought correctly.
I / we have been in the numismatic business since before 1964.
The Royal Mint didn't start producing and marketing collector coins until 1970, just ahead of decimalisation, so there would have been nobody at the mint to build a relationship with.
Even then, they decided that they would market direct, so there was still no way to start a relationship with them. This may have been partially because there was no established market in the UK for new issue coins.
In the run up to decimalisation, and before the RM started, we were active in sourcing mint bags of new coins, and making up our own annual coin sets. If you come across any minty UK coin sets from about 1965 to 1967, there is a good chance (about 50%) they were ones we assembled and sold.
I don't remember which year the RM started offering to supply UK dealers direct, but guess it might have been in the 1980s.
We didn't set up our first web site until 1998, so until then, there was probably no way we could have generated sufficient sales volume to make it worthwhile us taking direct new issue coins and sets from the RM. At that time, we were the only coin dealer in the UK to have a website, and also one of the first in the world.
In 1999, I decided it was time we joined in, influenced by the expected popularity of Princess Diana, and her memorial crown. From memory, I think we bought 500 of the BU specimen pack crowns direct from the Mint. These were £9.95 from the RM, but I think we discounted them to £8.95 https://24carat.co.uk/frame.php?url=princessdianacrown.php.
Just before 1st January 2000, when investment gold became exempt from VAT in the UK and EU, we launched two new websites https://goldsovereigns.co.uk/ and https://taxfreegold.co.uk/, which helped to expand the UK market for gold bullion. These three heritage websites still exist, but we no longer actively maintain or update them.
In 2000, when the RM restarted production of bullion sovereigns, we contracted with them for a direct supply. We were expected to buy a minimum of 5,000 of their bullion sovereigns in a 6 week period in order to qualify for their optimum pricing. We failed to achieve this, and had to pay a surcharge on the ones we had taken. As we made little or no profit on the deal, we stopped, and did not try again for some years, 2005 I think.
We also found that it was for many years cheaper, better, and easier, to buy proof sovereigns, and most other collectable new issues from international distributors, than direct from the Mint.
For most of the above time, we pitched our prices at a discount compared with the Royal Mint, and I strongly suspect they did not like this, although most of our customers did.
They also threatened legal action against us when I dared to point out that our Sovereign Mintmark Sets https://goldsovereigns.co.uk/mintmarksets.php were cheaper, and better than their sets. It is difficult to maintain a good trading relationship with a company who threatens without justification, to sue you for defamation.
Despite the above, we did buy bullion sovereigns from them, from 2005 I think, although during the Financial / Credit / Banking / Sub-Prime crises of 2008/9, it was very difficult to get supplies because big American, and possibly German distributors hoovered up most of their production.
I also can't remember when we stopped dealing with them, but think it may have been January 2015. They gave us no notice and no reason. It is difficult to maintain a successful trading relationship with a state owned monopoly supplier who treats its customers in such a manner.
Your last sentence (question?) "Why on earth would a British company which has been trading for nearly 60 years need to buy British gold from overseas." was quite a good one. I would be delighted if you would ask the Royal Mint, and extremely surprised if you received an answer.

Just about to go out but thought I'd post this first. Just got an email from Chard's stating my coin is with their warehouse team and a link provided option to choose my dispatch date next week. Nice service.
Not once did I wonder where my coin was and what was the hold up 🤥
All jokes aside, Chard's are top draw.

I think it’s worth noting that only 12 of the STOD 6th February 2022 sovereigns have sold on ebay.
Thats 1% of the total mintage, I know ebay is just one selling platform but I think that speaks volumes.
It’s one to hold for the future.

I wouldn’t draw down unless you have a strong proposition mate. I was considering drawing from my mortgage to get a wind turbine. Reckon it would pay for itself in around  8 years, especially if fuel prices keep going up. I’m really on the fence, especially as noticed the early repayment charge on the new mortgage offer sits at 5% for the 5 year term. Always check the details.

The Russian Government has removed VAT on gold purchases for it's citizens this morning.
Whether that has any effect on supply/ demand/ pricing for us non-Russki's I genuinely have no idea?

    Hi Everyone
Thank you all for the lovely things you have said about our team at Bleyer and kind words of support, even from Lawrence at Chards.
Things are very difficult at the moment for everyone. People have been set against one another and bent a bit out of shape - whether about Brexit, Covid, Ukraine or something else.
We recognise this and try to combat it by showing compassion, rather than getting angry as that doesn't help anyone.
I think it helps to think of us as all being on the same team.
I hope you all have a wonderful day, I have a bit of Devon sunshine here to put a smile on my face as well as knowing that many of you have our backs.
    Thank you again.

    Hi Gary
I see I am a bit late to the party here as I've been tied up in meetings all morning. I really do not understand why you felt the need to air something that I thought we had already addressed to your complete satisfaction.
Since this is in the public domain I am respecting your privacy, but here are the facts to put the record straight. I am very proud of my wonderful team who bend over backwards to help people all they can, it is a shame when this is not appreciated.
You have purchased several times from us and due to the amount of money spent overall, we requested standard compliance information. The fact that we have these procedures, keeps our bank and our merchant terminal provider happy. We do not pass this data onto anyone and this was clearly explained to you in a long email from me personally. Bullion dealers are routinely targeted by fraudsters using innocent people's money to buy bullion that can be easily turned into cash, our request to you was strictly standard practice - nothing more than that.
This was your tenth order over a period of almost 7 years so yes, since you seemed so upset about being asked for ID and your orders are not of enormous value, I felt it reasonably safe to make a small exception in this case. You ordered 2021 coins and 2022 coins. Our database was out, so there were no 2021 coins available but I did have 2022 coins coming in.
In addition to waiving the ID request, I offered you a discount of £43.46 or a refund for the 2021 coins.
You were not happy with this offer and requested a refund. My sales team processed the refund immediately and advised that it may not show up immediately on your account.
I am interested to know what else we could possibly have done to please you?
I hope that whatever pain you are in will pass soon.
    Best wishes
    Caroline

    Few interesting facts about @BleyerBullion
Not all their items are in stock and that's up to customer to check.
They recently stood over a price glitch which cost them a few thousand pounds so I sincerely doubt they are playing games and a refund shouldn't be a problem.
They are on here so reach out to them and discuss privately until satisfied.
When my first and only order ( but not the last) was ready to be shipped ,I got a nice courtesy call to make sure I'd be in on day of delivery, not many do that!!
Maybe you genuinely do have a grievance, but to come straight through the door with size 14s on ranting ,instead of seeking advice and help isn't the way to get problems resolved, not to mention could harm said business drastically.
