Skyfiller got a reaction from BigSid in A couple Qs regarding grade C sovereigns & best bang for buck coins for someone looking to buy gold in the UK.
I have 3 sovereigns on back order from Chards. I bought them at a price I was very happy with. It very clearly stated they were not in stock and there was no estimated delivery date. I was happy with the contract and parted with my money. I have been informed 1 is now in stock and given an estimated date for the other 2.
I don’t get what all the fuss is about?
The contract is clear and they have been very good with their communication.
In fact I’m really confused. If you don’t like the terms of the sale just don’t click the buy button! 😳
what other company gives you first dibs on a coin or grade of coin via internet, and let’s you pay for it there and then at that days price whilst not knowing what it may cost them. That’s a hell of a service for me as a stacker.

You say you're not bothered about dent and scratches but you'll have a job selling them when the time comes other than to dealers for quite a bit below the spot price.  If you want more options when you wish to sell i'd go for the best condition you can afford.

We would rather sell coins which are actually in stock.
Sure we charge for delivery, and so do all our competitors, except that many of them simply include it in the price to start with, then claim "free postage".
For most of our popular bullion products, we now show a price / premium comparison chart, with and without postage, and about 90% of the time, our prices are lower across the board, and across most quantity breaks.

Yes, it seems clear he is talking about @ChardsCoinandBullionDealer.
Although we would rather sell coins we have in stock, but in times of high demand like now and the 2007/8/9 credit/banking/sub-prime crisis, readily available bullion stock dries up, and not just on a UK level, but worldwide. During the Covid crisis, production and transport has also created supply tightness. Some dealers simply hike their premiums to rip-off levels, some shut up shop. We are happy to sell new coins which we often have to wait for too. We also make a market in secondary market bullion coins, but only those we have a reasonable expectation of covering in a reasonable time.
While @Paul is entitled to his opinion "Not a great business practice, selling stuff you don't have", we disagree. This has been discussed on TSF previously, at great length. We always make it as clear as we possibly can whether we have coins in stock, and for items not in stock, expected supply times for new coins, secondary market supply is much harder to forecast.
There is no need to "read the small print". If there is any likely delay, we show a very in-your-face pop-up banner which spells it out very clearly. This pop-up cannot be closed or dismissed withour making a positive choice about whether to continue or choose an alternative.
The main point is that we offer a choice.

The time on the label is 9 mins past midnight on a Friday. Night shift! No managers, no quality control and staffing is generally at a minimum. It is a very relaxed atmosphere and can imagine the operator watching the latest series of the walking dead whilst packing these up. Also anyone working Friday night shift just wants to get out the door. Have to go now, need to clock in 😉.

So I bought this 1756 Ducaton raw for a killer of a price and I sent it to PCGS. I was only expecting an AU 58 so when the grade came back MS63 I was amazed by it. These are harder and harder to come by especially one with original toning.

    Hello all,
I wondered how many people knew this story - I only heard about it a few weeks ago & found it very interesting so thought I would share it on here.

On 18th July 2017, The Pobjoy Mint announced that a trademark infringement necessitated the firm to remove the word BRITANNIA from the Reverse Proof 2017 .999 fine silver 1-ounce bullion coins minted for the Falkland Islands.

The change during production means that a total of 7,329 coins have been issued with the inscription, creating a relatively low-mintage version of the coin.
“We will be restarting production of these coins without the inscription for the remaining 42,671 of the issue limit,” according to a statement from the Pobjoy Mint.

Pobjoy Mint “was not aware” that Britannia is trademarked on coin, according to the firm. It was later confirmed that the trademark resides with the Royal Mint, based on a search with the United Kingdom’s Intellectual Property Office.

Skyfiller got a reaction from Widsith in Is collecting fakes a thing?
I do quite a bit with the police and they are not interested in these. They kinda have more important things to worry about! None had seen a fake £2 coin though and were surprised as it obviously takes a bit of manufacturing. Will see if thefakepoundcoindatabase want them unless @LawrenceChard wants them for his growing collection?
In answer to your last question, yes that's fine. I know a lot of people who collect bombs and you wouldn't believe the money some of the rare ones go for! I don't personally collect bombs but I used to have the largest collection of 30mm RARDEN ammunition. Sold the whole collection a few years ago as there was literally no other variations or experimental versions left to collect and it got a bit boring then but I still help EOD/EOC out occasionally with identifications.

I do still collect these though 🙂

Anyway, back on topic. I believe the royal mint tried to protect the name 'sovereign' in court a few years back and failed http://www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWHC/Ch/2017/417.html and anyone can legally make a coin and call it a sovereign. It doesn't have to be gold. So what we perceive as fake gold sovereigns being sold from china and the likes are actually legit sovereigns (if they call them a sovereign, and they can because they are allowed to) made from a base metal and gold plated. It would therefore only fall on the wrong side of the law if you intentionally tried to pass it off as a different metal than it was actually made from? I believe, although I could be wrong, that the dragon design would also not be under copywrite due to the age of it (from memory 50 years after the artist has died.... or something like that)??

I loathe coins that have pictures printed on them. In my view you either collect the coin or buy a picture, combining the two has zero appeal.
I often have a little groan when i see mints (the RM especially) issuing coloured coins. Silver will tarnish over the years, what are they going to look like in 20 or 30 years time ? In my head i picture those hazy, green tattoos that can be seen on pensioners arms. You know the ones where you get caught staring at whilst trying to decypher what they once represented (or maybe that's just me)....

My apologies Hooper if you took offence, it was nothing personal as with questions like "In general are bars better than coins for weight?, How do I know that I have not bought a pile of chocolate coins? and Do silver bullets kill vampires?" I thought this whole thread was a spoof.
I now realise you were actually being serious!
In general are bars better than coins for weight? If they are the same material and the same size they weigh the same so I'd say neither are better or worse. It's a personal preference.
Should I start slow or blow my load straight away? As others have said if you are new to precious metals slow is probably best until you know something about them.
How do I know that I have not bought a pile of chocolate coins? Heat test and taste test.
What is the best delivery method? Face to face. If not possible the most secure and insured method the seller is willing to post by.
How do I pay people on this forum? Very much up to the individual you want to pay. I've seen BACS, PayPal, Cash, Bitcoin to name a few common ones.
What is the best way to know if the seller has a good reputation? Know the seller. If you have not brought from a particular seller before then look at his feedback from other buyers.
What is the best postage option? The most secure and insured method the seller is willing to post by which mostly depends on the location of the seller. In the UK, Royal Mail special delivery is the only one that insures bullion as a matter of course.
Do silver bullets kill vampires? I have no idea, have never met a vampire to try.

I have been caught out with a few, some of the earlier fakes where easier to spot as for some reason they looked oriental around the eyes,
and have seen a few more recent that have wear showing however look freshly minted , they are now faking them with designations such as MS cleaned or AU scratched ,
the idea behind this methinks is that people will think that they are faking perfect coins , so a cleaned coin should be alright.
Great idea for a topic @LawrenceChard ,the more info collectors have the better.
