    Hi All
I have not disclosed previously, but in some of my rare spare time, I am a scambaiter.  That means that I ethically waste the time of Internet scammers.
I started a few years ago after my best friends elderly dad was scammed out of many many thousands of pounds.  It is impossible to go after the scammers directly but it is possible to waste their time and frustrate their efforts.  In doing so I get U.K. bank account details from scammers that they use to move their money to foreign locations.  I get those accounts closed.  I won’t post details (too easy for scammers to alter their behaviours) but am happy to answer questions if anyone is interested by PM.
Out “friend” Dan told spun me a few lines  about the junk he has been selling, so to waste his time and demoralise him, I have been getting him to take endless photos of his coins promising very high values as some of them are “rare”. He claims is coins are genuine….
Side photos, black and white ones with light ones in the dark.  This morning, he cracked and was abusive but not before I got his email address and EXIF’s that located where he lives to pass to Action Fraud.
Similarly, using another identity I have been negotiating a “deal” for his replica Honda Type R.  I offered over the asking price, and he is driving it to Barry (a way from his home) to “meet me” at the Tesco car park tomorrow where he things I will be handing over “1 big one and a slab of special brew”.  I call this sending him on a “Safari”, where I will change the meeting location after he has been waiting for 30 mins.
I cannot stand scammers who prey on people and, whilst the forum may not approve of what I do (or maybe you do) I will continue to disrupt scammers, report them to Action Fraud, police and have their accounts closed.
    All the best

I do not understand why someone does not report this blatant fraud for what it is to the police or a magistrate. Passing off a forged/fake coin carries a possible penalty of jail and/or a fine - max. £10,000 - like other fraudulent goods. I certainly would do this, or threaten it, if I bought such a 'coin' and then realised what it actually was. Sovereigns are specifically protected from forgery in the Forgery and Counterfeiting Act, 1981. So are half sovereigns, and krugerrands interestingly enough, but not, apparently, American gold dollars.

Indeed it is not easy.  The east is a mix of authoritarian and socialist states, with less than robust rule of law or recognition of property rights.  The nations may be trying to be financially independent, but at a whiff of failure they'll be seizing your property.  The individual is not so independent as in the west.

then you are thinking in the past.
a lump of gold represents someone else's hard labour to get the metal in a useful form.
inheriting it, you can spend it or leave it as an heirloom. but you have no way of expanding it.
a comparable understanding of gold allows you to secure any gold you come across in your
lifetime and add to it when possible. the work is not done but the world is your oyster.

    Hi Dan,
I am afraid they all look counterfeit to me.
Take the first coin as an example - you just don't see massive splodges of metal on minted Morgans as per the below I have cut out.  The other coins all have issues as far as I can see... The colour looks off The weight is also way off - a dead giveaway.  I have a slick Morgan with almost no detail left and this comes in at 25.64g - yours are definitely too light The magnet test works on the steel counterfeits but I have read that other non-magnetic metals are now being used The other coins all have issues as far as I can see... I am not the forums Morgan Dollar expert, but I have bought a >200 hundred for my collection - the majority graded while working / travelling in the US over the years - the majority being PCGS / NCG graded and spent time examine them for VAM errors under microscopes.  Other TSF members views more than welcome!

From the ordering of your pictures I think you have:
    1904 - S
    1894 - CC
1888 - No Mint Mark - Therefore Philadelphia
    1893 S

The dates and mintmark are significant because in 3/4 cases represent coins that are rare / high value / hard to get hold of...or don't exist
1904 - S - Sought after and is noted as a key issue in Bowers book.  It is relatively low mintage.  This is not easy to find....
1894 - CC - No Morgans were minted at the Carson City mint in 1894
    1888 - Relatively common
1893 S - Rare and very highly sought after.  If yours was genuine even in that condition I would guess it would be worth £2000 or more

Only because you asked, I can think of one:
    https://www.chards.co.uk/2021-gold-sovereign-uncirculated-coin/13295
The premium is shown for each quantity break, and there is even a UK Dealer Comparison Tab to make it even easier.
Currently, we don't have a Peruvian Libra page, although we might have a few in stock, but not had time to create a page. @ChardsCoinandBullionDealer tend to price these similar to UK sovereigns.

TommyTwoShots reacted to Widsith in I think there is a misunderstanding regarding the magnet slide test
    Dear All,
I often see comments about silver's diamagnetic nature when discussing using the magnet slide test.  In my opinion, this is a mistake.
Silver is a conductive material.  It is its conductivity that 'slows it down'.
When a magnetic field moves through a conductive material (like when sliding across a conductive coin) small currents of electrical current are formed in the coin. These are called 'eddy currents'. They are in a closed loop of current flow in the metal. These currents, in tern, create a magnetic field in opposition to the field that produced them (from the magnet). This results in a counter force that 'slows down the' magnet on its slide journey due to gravity.
How much current that flows in the eddy currents are due to the conductivity of the material (based on 'identical' coin geometries). Copper has a lower conductivity and so the eddy currents will be smaller and the retarding force will also be smaller.  So the magnet will experience a lesser retarding force and will slide faster. The same sort of thing will happen with other metals that are diamagnetic. The diamagnetic aspect just means that the magnet will not 'stick' to non-ferromagnetic materials.  However, there are non-magnetic stainless steels and so the same argument (above) will apply there.

    Hi All
I have spent some time looking for some specific Morgan Dollars, and what is really apparent is the very big disparity in prices of Morgan’s in the U.K. and US - with very high quality coins being much much cheaper in the US.

When Covid restrictions have been relaxed I am going back to the US and will be buying a load high quality Morgan dollars!
