GoldStatue reacted to silversky in The future of silver, VAT and import charges into the UK now a Deal has been done!?
What percentage of the Royal Mint's Silver product do people think is bought by British Investors/savers?
I suspect that a high percentage of it has been shipped on aircraft over to Europe before being sold back with limited VAT schemes. Obviously now that this has all changed, I think the Royal Mint is going to find that demand for their silver products suffers a serious decline. It's in fact likely in my opinion that the revenue will end up collecting far less in tax because of this drop in activity / loss of profit than they will make from the few who decide to pay the higher VAT inclusive prices from the mint.
Any of the remaining sales to foreign investors will of course be sold VAT free anyway with any foreign charges applied at import side meaning that HMRC doesn't get to collect 20% VAT on export sales.
The Royal Mint's silver business has grown precisely because of the VAT loopholes. Now that they're gone I think their Silver business will have to be significantly reduced.

As last year, I am posting my full 1967 collection as it was in the end of 2020. First part has anything except the slabs. These will follow in the next couple of days, as I don't have everything in one place. So here we have coin and medal sets, large medals, coin envelopes and all the bits and pieces.

GoldStatue reacted to Stacktastic in GOLD DEALS - (UK & Europe) See a deal, post it here
I think Costco might be on to something here, especially when coin shops are closed due to the plandemic.
This is hardly a deal of the century, but there is something nice about walking into a supermarket and buying metals.
Not to mention no risk of postage & inspection of goods in person before purchase.
Would be nice to see tubes of brits especially during a spot price pull back!
I don't fancy paying VAT on that though.
Imagine the look on the cashiers face if you bought the large gold bar!

GoldStatue got a reaction from Silverman2U in The future of silver, VAT and import charges into the UK now a Deal has been done!?
I had a thought along the same sort of lines and effectively get a free weekend away out of it, but the European dealers all seem to place obscene premiums on platinum so even if you were willing to take the risk of getting caught smuggling it doesn't make any financial sense to do it in the first place.

Arg. Very true. Just did a quick read up. It was Churchill that was for the EU idea, however Britain stood on the sidelines at the time as the ECSC was formed to deal initial with trading of steel, the U.K. felt it would alienate them from trade with the commonwealth and believed that the pound was the global currency. Not sure that idea worked out well, probably about is good as Gordon Brown flogging the nations gold reserves for £200-300 an once in the early 2000’s. How many of us remember that ;).
In 1961 U.K. tried to get in France vetoed in twice over the next decade, then in around 69 they got a chance and by 71 they were in, Denmark shortly after.
ECSC changed names and grew along the way going to EC and then to EU I believe.

GoldStatue got a reaction from Paul in What will the price of Gold be (£/GBP) on 1st Jan 2022
£1250
The past year has really been the perfect storm for the gold price, COVID, Brexit, additional economic pressures all on top of an already rising gold price. It would seem highly unlikely that the world will see another year like it in 2021. For me, it’ll be a year of recovery and not one of new gold price records.

Over the moon that I've finished my collection of the QB series with these two. Many thanks to @GSTrading. For a long while I didn't get why the Griffin commanded such high premiums compared to other QB's but now looking at the detailing in the breast and wing feathers, the relief of this imprint really 'pops'. It's a lovely looking coin.
The Yale, however looks a bit underwhelming. I'm not sure if this is what you get for bullion grade, but no matter how I lit it or moved the camera, I couldn't get the 'warty goat' to look good. Meh! On the other hand, he obverse of the later QB's is definitely smarter with the anti-forgery milling round Her Maj's head making a really smart finish.
What next...?
