Una is obviously a very in demand coin still. But auctions can so easily be be fixed , Not that we ever would but two of us here who both own unas could list one and both bid against each other until it was over 100k, hell why not make it 200k?!?, a new record! we then make payment and split the 6% commission cost. For a mere few grand each our coins now have a past sales history of over 200k. Now we list somewhere else with a 160k reserve and hope a wealthy buyer thinks they are getting a bargain.
I think the old saying "somethings worth what someone's willing to pay for it" is completely true. And auctions of such high valued collectables are bound to be full of corruption, as is playing at high stakes poker, pool, or many other high stakes transactions.
That's not to say this isn't completely genuine. It is the most in demand recent issue coin in history as far as im aware and the sky is the limit really. But that's why I cant and don't trust auction results.

watchesandwhisky reacted to Foster88 in Do you know who ‘old coppernose’ is?
I thought this might be of interest to some of you.
Do you know who ‘old coppernose’ is?
I’ll give you a clue, he was the second Tudor monarch, he had six wives, a chronic jousting injury and by contemporary writings he also had a terrible temper.
I’m talking about Henry VIII of course. But why was he called ‘old coppernose’?
Well, towards the end of his reign (1544-1551) the country was in the financial terrible. It sounds familiar, I know. Henry VIII’s wars with Scotland and France had cost the King’s coffers a small fortune.
During what is known as The Great Debasement, gold coinage was reduced from 23ct to 20ct and silver coinage was reduced from 92.5% (Sterling) to a mere 25%.
So why was he known as old coppernose? Well the silver coinage was mostly copper by the end of his reign and as the coins were circulated the high points of the coins, naturally, the obverse and (his nose) wear first. Ultimately giving old Henry VIII a copper nose. It continued into the early reign of his son, Edward VI and it wasn’t until Elizabeth I that it was stopped and a privy mark added to earlier coins. It got so bad that traders in mainland Europe refused English coinage.
If any of you want to learn more, the programme Digging For Britain series 1 episode 6 towards the end tells the story better than I ever could.

I'm partial to a nice double sov meself. There is something very reassuring about the size, weight, and feel of them in your hand which you don't get with sovs or half sovs. But any of 1/2 sovs, full sovs, double sovs are good to have and with your budget you could buy a nice little combination for the sake of variety...

These are the forum stats for ALL feedback left for the whole forum
30 bad deals, and they might not have been scams but could be bad packaging, bad comms, withdrawing from deal, late delivery, lot showing up at a meeting, not honouring deal, damaged or misdescribed coin) 9 neutral deals and 37,000+ (plus a lot of people don't leave feedback or don't wish to have it left and request it not to be left so it will most likely be a good few 1000+ more positives)
Think we have a tight ship here, not a sh*te-tip !
Stay and enjoy its nice here

watchesandwhisky got a reaction from ShineyMagpie in How to save/pay of mortgage/ pension ect ect
Coming back to this topic, my estimates weren't a million miles away, water and sewage cheaper, electricity a lot cheaper even at a new high fix! (90 a month) shopping underestimated thats about £200.
Things have been going well and I have made £3500 in overpayments so far.
My pension is sitting at £1400 now, at nearly 40 this is pretty scary... up until now I have been on basic workplace pension (i put in 5% + 1% AVC, company puts in 3% (i have changed it from the default "10 year life Strat" too 100% equity..
as of the 6th of December I have been there a year, and I will get 10% from the company, with the option to raise my additional voluntary contributions , im going to put my 6% upto 10% meaning I get 20% of my basic wage going into a pension.
My mortgage fix of ten years at 2.59% is now looking like a solid move, But I am aware that will pass sooner than it might seem, and unless I make overpayments there will still be significant debt owing at the next fix that is highly likely to be a lot less favourable. I currently own approx 30% of my property.
I am torn, should I up my AVC on pensions, to maybe a total of 15/20% payment from me to go with 10% from employer - to try and catch up somewhat to where I should be. Or just raise my contributions to 10% and anything spare overpay mortgage?
I am aware my pension needs time to grow, and what I put in now can have 28 years of compound growth still, but that dwindles by each year that passes, however at the same time that new mortgage fix moves a year closer...

watchesandwhisky reacted to Paul in Silly question: marking/labelling capsules
Quadrum cases are lovely for gold coins. My storage preference. Uniform size and can have 1/20s to 1oz
all displayed nice
Also helps sorting and storage with the being square
Try them from seller andy_jack on eBay or direct from their web site coingallery.co.uk
Label them using a standard 99012 dymo label with dymo labelwriter 450 Duo. The width is perfect size for quadrum
You can fit coin type, gold weight, date and price paid

watchesandwhisky reacted to jultorsk in Your best coin purchase of 2022 ??
Despite making a promise on not risking buying ungraded stuffs at auctions, took a punt on a raw 2012 proof sov based on shoddy photos at a random county auction and after NCS it got back as PF70UC. It was not dirt cheap as raw either mind you, but got lucky and was well relieved pleased it turned out good. 😅
Numerous happy purchases from the forum as well in both graded and ungraded sections - thanks to @SVcollector@shawy2510 @richatthecroftjust to name a few.
Wishing all members an excellent New Year, here's to happy and successful collecting in 2023! 🥂

watchesandwhisky reacted to Pete in Looks like I'm not the only noob around here...
Welcome to the silver addicts club.
Once you get started you will need your habitual regular fix !!
Advice to a noob from a seasoned old fart -
1. Cut your teeth on sovereigns ( maybe consider half sovereigns - BUT make sure you can tell the difference !!! )
I've seen people confuse a half and a full and believe me unless you hold both at the same time you have a 50% chance of getting this wrong.
2. If buying silver - good place to start, as relatively cheap compared to gold - DO NOT BUY YOUR FIRST COINS ON E_BAY.
Stick to popular bullion one ounce coins like Britannias, Maples, American Eagles, Philharmonics, Libertads, Pandas etc.
I strongly recommend you buy from sellers on this forum with a perfect feedback score as you will most likely get the best prices.
Failing that check out the popular dealers - BullionbyPost, Atkinsons, Chards, SilverTrader and others and look for the best deal taking into account VAT and postage as some of these sellers add VAT to their headline price and some include shipping.
3. Buy digital scales for about £10-20 that can measure to 0.01g.
4. Ensure you have a reference to the coins you buy stating dimensions, weights etc. and be able to measure these things and understand that modern fakes from China can look perfect but there are tests you can do and that's why until you have some experience and genuine coins in your inventory only then can you consider eBay and Facebook etc. which are ripe in fakes but not from many reputable sellers - only you don't know who they are yet.
This forum can be your best friend so be prepared to spend time reading various posts.
Most questions will be answered here and if you wish to start your collection say in silver place a Wanted in the trade section stating what you are seeking, quantity and ideally price you are prepared to pay after checking the dealers etc and maybe even sold on eBay listings so you know market prices. Most if not all sellers on this site have done their homework so be realistic in expectations to gain the best responses.

watchesandwhisky reacted to ant1882 in How to save/pay of mortgage/ pension ect ect
Logged into my pension account recently to see that my completely cash balance is receiving interest of around 3%, paid monthly.
This is with Vanguard, hard to find info from their website but it seems they are following the BOE rates. I was surprised, expected them to be paying nothing at all for cash just sat there.
Yes still losing to inflation of course, but I'd rather not be invested in anything to do with stocks / bonds for a while. Can't touch it anyway for 20+ years.

Looks like a cartwheel penny, and seems to be "counterstamped" I suspect that is where the value may be, in that counterstamp if it is anything interesting so you will need to do some reasearch.
