VAT Fraud is illegal, and must not be condoned, as with all illegal activity.

That aside, the market for silver is quite poor at the momemnt and clearly this is impacting emotions. In recent years the large premiums far exceeded 20% on the secondary market.

Now that it is not, and in some cases turning to a discount to spot, doesn't mean that we should go round making false allegations and insinuations.  As far as I understand it, people are still able to sell way above spot on here - even though there are many anecdotes about people selling even slabbed eagles below spot. It might be that the prices on the forum have to fall further, not necessirly due to the actions of one or two sellers, but because of the reaities of the market in the real world.

And I'm still struggling to understand what mass migration has to do with any of this.

Sadly, definitions have changed.

Gold is money. It is not subject to VAT.

Today, silver is not money, it's a commodity and thus attracts VAT.

All of the gold ever discovered still exists, yet a lot of silver ends up in landfill.

Technically, alcohol is a solution..

A decent thread and having to agree with @HonestMoneyGoldSilver makes my skin itch.

Let’s just say theoretically there is a seller on Instagram(🤷🏼‍♂️)or elsewhere selling silver and not paying VAT. If HMRC believes he’s lost a few quid, he won’t just come after the seller, he’ll tear into everything with the buyer. You are not innocent until proven guilty, he will tell you what you have to pay (his guess) and you have to prove him wrong(receipts, invoices, bank statements etc) he then might feel he needs to look at what else you’ve bought and sold like Lego or Sports Shoes, Star Wars Pyjamas etc

You import silver-usually you have to pay through the couriers according to the HS code and documentation. If you’ve been charged accidentally VAT on investment Gold- Tough. You claim it back, they don’t care or want to know. The Seller abroad is NOT responsible for duties and taxes of the country shipped too-you are(T@Cs). Ignorance and pretend naivety is not a defence.

As the stunning and brave Pirate said, the selling of bulk silver has killed the basic collector’s  ability to sell their couple of ounces. The issue then becomes the small profit they’ve made would normally introduce them to fractional gold and climb the investment ladder. Now that progress stops. The selfish, arrogant seller has then killed the forum sales pages to line their criminal pockets.

Bigger picture is important.

Then the basic collector needs to be more selective regarding the couple of ounces they buy. Nobody is entitled to a small profit because they bought something they consider to be an investment.

All part of the learning curve.

I can't get hold of any red anymore since the gov tightened the noose on who could buy it. I'll swap you 10oz of silver for 250ltr of cherry? Lol

Good on those who don't pay tax. Tax is quite literally theft. Paying council tax makes you more of a criminal than someone selling silver without paying VAT. Why? Well because many councils invest in arms dealers like Lockheed Martin and BAE etc who make arms to drop on little kids in Yemen for example. So by paying your taxes you are complicit in that genocide! How about that for a morning wake up call! P.S screw the government!!!

Keep telling yourself that mate

Why not become a conchie or a pacifist like the Republic of Ireland? I mean why not, if you don't harm anyone else, nobody will harm you. It's not like the Russians, Chinese, North Koreans or Iranians would steamroller the UK if we all went into a field, smoked a fat one and started singing kum ba yah

Evil prevails when good men stand by and do nothing

It was defence contractors who created computers, satellites, microchips, GPS, nuclear power, jet engines, the internet, microwaves, cryptography, you know everything you're using right now to have this conversation? Mostly British inventions.

The problem is not those not paying VAT on silver. The problem is having a two-tiered legal system where half obey the law and the other half don't. Those who don't follow the law prosper at the expense of  those who do follow the law. If you don't pay your council tax then I have to pay it for you, or else we all pay via inflation or we all do without public services

For the record:

Do we consent to having our silver taxed? No, it's a cruel joke bordering on criminal itself .... if I was PM of the UK then VAT/CGT on precious metals would be abolished tomorrow.

I'm no pacifist. If someone does me harm I'm gonna retaliate not stand by idly. If you're such a good law abiding citizen you have a duty to not commit terrorism which by the governments very own definition you are committing if you pay your taxes, because you're aiding and abetting the military industrial complex to drop bombs on innocent civilians. Are you happy that your council tax goes to central government and then they take a nice slice and give it back to your local council with a few zeros taken off?

Legal and lawful are totally separate things mate. Legal pertains to the UK government PLC corporation ie you have to abide by it's company policy by not breaking any acts or statutes. Law on the other hand simply means cause no alarm harm or distress to another living being as to do so would be breaking the law. It's illegal to not wear a seatbelt but it's not unlawful.

I would happily pay my council tax if it actually went into my community but until it actually does I'm not paying a penny. I'll empty my own bins and I'm not fussed about street lighting especially these new ones that have EMFs off the scale!

I agree with you to a certain extent and I definitely agree that VAT on silver, especially on legal tender from the Royal Mint, is an abomination. The mail carriers like Royal Mail and the insurance companies treat silver bullion as money so how is it we are paying VAT on money itself? It's like being charged a 20% fee for using the ATM
