2023 Coronation King Charles III and Queen Camilla Gold Sovereign

less than a month to the coronation day... and still no official info on forthcoming 2023 issues...

considering that (at some point they will have to get back to routine...) in November 2023 the Proof sovereign 2024 will be issued... there are at least 2 different sovereigns to be released soon. The Coronation (Sotd on the 6 of may)? and the standard 2023 proof/bullion one...

i also hope they will have coins ready within a month from official release... jesus christ its sooo depressing realizing such a milestone like the sovereign being in so bumbling hands

I’m having a feeling the design might be William Wyon’s St. George and the Dragon which we were hankering for as part of the Great Engravers series.

It’s just a feeling… I have no inside information or hints or anything at all from anyone.

I’m just deducing this from what I’m seeing and hearing:

- Proclamation says St. George and the Dragon (though the Coat of Arms also has a Proclamation!)

- Someone here said they heard from a dealer that it will be different than the regular design

- Other Mints have released Wyon’s G&D this year.

The actual wording used by the dealer was that the Coronation SOTD sovereign "is different from the usual run-of-the-mill, Strike on the Day Sovereigns" - so make of this what you will.

A one off Jody Clark design with some added queens beast influence to the George & dragon could be nice also consider. Won't be long to wait now

I've cleared my royal mint credit account ahead of time so can go for a gold £5 if there's one offer

Plain edge ??

But most recent SOTD sovereigns have been plain edge, so this alone would not make it "different from the usual run-of-the-mill" SOTDs.

I was hoping once they did the petition crown we would see a sovereign with raise edge lettering…..can you imagine how a a £5 sov would look…….yes please!

But the petition crown had many flaws. The finning on the edge could be horrible...

Let us pray.

If we do the right thing this time, we might have to do the right thing again next time.

A raised edge inscription along the lines of the Petition Crown would justify the £850 price tag.

Although the SotDs have always been more expensive than the Proofs. And now that the Proofs have almost breached the £700 mark, £850 for an SotD (even a basic one) might be the new normal. 🫤

Though incuse lettering would be cheaper (I think) - and also a novelty (for the sovereign).  They could also produce the blanks (flans) with edge lettering before the Coronation and so the striking would then still qualify as a SOTD.

The RM ought to get us working for them, I'm sure we could come up with better ideas than they currently have!

They got the great engravers from me…..but I called it “ the master of the mint series” based on the gothic crown.

I’ve already pitched my idea for a predecimal coronation set akin to the 1902-1911 sets.

the guy I pitched it to got a promotion into new products I got jack

If I understand correctly there will be two sovereigns for the Coronation - SOTD and Proof. Which of the two will become most sought after in years to come?  I would be able to afford just one, but not sure which one. Many thanks

If they do release a SOTD (BU) and Proof sovereign on the same day, I fear they are in danger of killing the market.  I suspect that quite a few people can only afford one (including me).

If they did start selling the proof on the same day as the SOTD (6th May), surely this destroys the distinctness of the SOTD (because we all know we will not receive either of them for another month or two).

As to which would be most sought after, I think a lot will depend on the mintages and the prices - which the Mint is hesitant to tell us before the release date!

I wish the mint would hurry up and state what coins and sets are going to be available for the coronation, can’t stand many more pages of this!🤔

and that's only page 2...

thing is.... this aint going to be over with release (and delayed delivery); as you may have noticed from another thread.... then there will be a couple hundreds of pages of people freaking out as they find the smallest imperfection and their coin/sets are not grading PF70...

From the information in the public domain via the proclomation, I have put this concept image together :

There is nothing to say that this years 2023 sovereign will not just be a return to the standard St George & Dragon.

On your website you state the proof sovereigns and sets will be released on 6th May, are you sure about this?  I thought they were going to be released sometime after the Coronation?

I’m sure they will go on sale on 6th May.

But as for when they’ll be actually dispatched… it’s a whole other story. 😛
