Fake or real sovereign?

Hello forum,

Today I got in contact with a seller who is offering a 1917-P Sovereign and I asked him to send me some photos.

Well, I must admit that I am still a novice on spotting fakes and the quality of the photos he offered me doesn't really help, although when I look at the photos, the rim, especially on the reverse, looks quite wrong to me. In some places it's too thick and also the toothed border lacks its sharpness.

What's your opinion?

Having looked at the photos, it was very easy to reach a definite conclusion.

He needs to buy a better camera (or phone) 🙂

Looks fake to me. But I am in no way an expert..... In fact: I could use a @LawrenceChard in a box to check my sovereigns. The way he checks the sovereigns is way more friendly than the 'ping' guy from the video @GoldDiggerDave shared ;)

By request:

Enjoy? 🙂

The rim looks dodgy at first glance, whilst the photos might not be the best I'd personally steer clear.
Could ask the seller to do a video just showing the sides and edges of the coin if you specifically want that coin and that might be more clear

@LawrenceChard

I remember seeing that introduction to fake ID video several years ago. I looked but didn't come across any subsequent episodes. Did you produce any?

I think the original was on your old website and then you started the process of changing over to the new site. It didn't seem as easy to navigate and find useful info as the old Goldsovereigns site.

I didn't realise you had a Youtube channel, I never thought to look and I'm surprised it didn't appear in my suggestions.

I always thought you standing behind your old showroom counter checking sovereigns was a good look😉

Thanks,

We did about 7 videos about spotting fakes, but found they would each take two people at least a few days to produce, just to create a 5-10 minute video. We still intend to create some more, but probably need to change and improve the format.

We built navigation into our original sites, but some people thought those difficult to navigate. The new site relies mainly on "Search" rather than a structured navigation. Most people looking to buy stuff seem to find it easier, but there are still issues between "products", "information", "blogs", "advice", and more. At any one time, there are probably two people working on the site development, and also at least one working on system development, or integrating the two parts.

There were shooting problems with me standing behind our old counter, and our new showroom is even worse for noise and acoustics. The room we used for the recent A.M.A. video is also too small, with other problems.

Its good, though, that we have lots of ideas for improvement, some of which are already in progress.

I'm not sure I can keep up with it all. 🙂
