Today's delivery, the 2002 half I have been after for ages! Also a beautiful selection of 925 coinage. The mint lustre on the half crowns and the shillings is just incredible. As much as I love gold, there is something so incredibly exciting about uncirculated 1900s early coinage! 😍

The above is (hopefully), a link to one of the most interesting threads on this forum, everything you would want to know about LMU coins …well worth a read. @Centauri167
Having just looked on the Chards website (where I bought lots of my LMU coins from), they are sold out of 20Fr roosters, and angels (as always!), so demand for them must be strong.
I am sure if I ever decided to part with my modest collection, @LawrenceChard would be interested in making me a generous offer 😉. Although maybe not for the rarities…1888,1896 torches’ , which carry a significant numismatic premium.
How can you not want to collect LMU coins:-
Roosters
Angels (less the two rarities)

They are not, especially in Europe. They're a good method to get fractional gold at a competitive price.

A single random date brit. Just to take the itch away...
Rather delighted to get a spotless 2014. Really like the plain field ones. Less is more...
@paulmerton have you had any joy with that awful 2014 you were sold? Mine was from Atkinsons.

Byazantine empire Theophilus semissis from 829 AD syracuse mint
Numista rarity 100
1.78 grams / 5p for scale how its survived for 1200 years in this condition is beyond me
History if your interested
Joint rule as junior emperor with Michael II (his father), 12 May 821 (or 1 June 822) - 2 October 829 A.D.
Joint rule with Constantine (his son), 5 June 830 - c. 831 A.D.
Joint rule with Michael III (his son), 1 September 840 - 20 January 842 A.D.
Theophilus was the son of Emperor Michael II, who raised him to the rank of co-emperor shortly after his own accession. Though his father was a little educated rough soldier, Theophilus was an accomplished scholar and highly cultured. Although he admired Arab art and civilization, he was obliged to expend much effort defending his eastern frontier against Mutasim, the Caliph of Baghdad. He died of dysentery in early 842, leaving his two-year-old son, Michael III as his successor.

Anecdote: somewhere in the 1980s or 90s, a couple found hidden under the timbers of their attic a bundle of 20 Mark Banknotes, a couple hundred Mark hidden away by possibly their grandparents. Hidden away for a rainy day. If the cache had only contained the same in 20 Mark Gold Coins...

When thinking about what to buy, first think on how're you going to sell one day.
That should influence what you should buy. You can never go wrong with national bullion coins (like Britannia, Eagle, Krügerrand, ...) as these are well trusted everywhere. The coin of the country you intend to sell in might be the most liquid to you. If you want to go into gold fractionals (i.e. under one ounce) it will do well to look at historical trade coins (like the Sovereign, ...).
If you're buying from savings or shifting from another asset, it's advisable not to buy everything at once - take the sum you want to invest and buy over a couple of months. That way you will achieve a cost average effect and mitigate your risk of buying on a peak (as well as the chance of buying on a dip, though).

KevinFlynn reacted to frugalman in Hello forum members
Hi forum members. I've had an interest in numismatic coins and precious metals (mainly antique silver) for many years. Buying from jumbles, car boot sales, junk shops when i could, then from ebay when it came along.
I have been into bullion stacking since about 2014 because I liked the idea of owning some of the .999 silver content Britannia's ready for a "sure thing" mega return after the horrendous price plummet of the time (having been unaware of their existence in 2013).
Still stacking So filling some of my time with some like minded people, and perhaps doing some trade or deals sometime in the future.
Take a quick look at this new 2022 Brit. that escaped R.M. quality control. Great detailed strike but Its so off center struck it has completely ruined the milled edge. I know that its only bullion but Its practically an error/reject. If I didn't know what I was looking at I would think it to be a bit iffy. Hope they get their act together soon.
Thank you for letting me join,
Much love, F.
