Although a sovereign man at heart, this coin is incredible and I think I would call it my best for 2022. The silky satin toning, in very deep blues and purples at the rim of the coin grading across the fields to the soft greys, pinks and gold tinge of the cameo’s, particularly on the Victoria side are very satisfying

    Happy New Year everyone.

Just a double sovereign from me. Had to move mountains to get the money together for it amid some financial dramas. Was having a run of bad luck in general and handing over £700+ to someone on here who soon after was kicked off the site for being unreliable was a bit of a risk to say the least. But it makes me smile every time i look at it...

Before Sovereigns it was numismatic Silver. This 1900 Florin is probably the best of the lot, especially for toning….

I'm especially excited if it is a St. George design. If it is, the question is, how big and how gold can I go?

I just hope it remains the case that the EIC and the Commonwealth Mint have also issued the GE series motifs from the RM to date. Issue date of the EIC 15.04.

Quite right, so this is now the 2nd mention! Bernard Sindall was mainly a sculptor. Oddly, he died in 1998 the year I bought this set. I don’t think the obverse is his best work though, having to morph the Tudor King Henry VII into QEII.

I now have an enduring image in my head of the Queen wielding a pair of Kalashnikovs and the head of a dog.

    Thanks a lot!! 🤣

I expect everyone has an opinion on this design. I just feel lucky to have the set. The obverse would otherwise have been a 'Maklouf'

Just injecting some Friday positivity back in this thread to balance out the atmosphere, I'm keeping my order, nothing has changed except for the delivery date, these still are:
A great design by JC. The very first coin of a new monarch. Part of the, arguably, most popular coin series in the world with the most collectors (i.e. massive demand now and in the future). Different to all other modern series. And, although mintage figures are high, they are still much lower than 1989, 2002 and 2005. If anything, the demand may be higher due to the cancellations.
I stand by my comment about 100 pages ago, though I enjoy the 360s in this thread. Nothing is 100%, but we are likely seeing the complete collapse of coin market if these fail to appreciate in the short, medium and long term.
Strong hands guys! Remember to look at the facts and analyse for yourself rather than be swayed by other people's opinions and mood.

I had a close friend who is not a coin collector but had some profits from a house sale come through and i advised him to go for the five coin set and hold.  Had a little time today as working from home to piece some info together from various sources to educate him a little further in coin history/values/past sales on these larger proofs historically and what they have achieved.  To anyone else who took the leap of faith, fingers crossed history should repeat with time as the market matures, coins disappear and get held in strong hand as years progress

Historically £5 proof gold coins were NOT struck every year, typically only in the first year coronation set
Years are 1826, 1839, 1887 (not first monarch in series) 1893 (not first monarch in series), 1902, 1911, 1937, 1952 and now 2022
It has only been since 1980 ongoing that a regular £5 sovereign was release annually

I saw there has been a 2oz gold Una & Lion in PF70 included in Heritages annual Januarys Platinum sale
Usual the sale of the year for the big hitters to be out and where the silver 2oz first made the market come alive and pumps the value skyward when it broke $10,000+
Will track to see what the market feels it is current worth is

    Questions…
I assume this is a “production defect” as it is seemingly affecting multiple coins, right?
And, based on my limited understanding of grading, it is only post production defects that are supposed to reduce the grade of a coin, right?
If so, then why is this flaw causing the coins to get a 69 and not a 70?

Really hard to say, in my humble opinion, i'd say the price metnioned earlier is about market for the raw set - at 16/17k to cover for risk with grading, few thousand less if wanting to sell urgently and few thousand more if there is a keen buyer.
A small spot on the obverse near the Queen's neck on the frosting. Would be interested to hear i yours has it also?
