You and me both! There’s a mini treasure trove of designs they could reissue and they’d be instant hits.

I am surprised that they have never done a G&D series of coins with different designs.

Isle of Man have done one for D Day at £35.  Loads of adverts on TV which might mean it's not selling.  Only in proof.

I’m certainly no authority but based on Marsh there’s only a distinction between ‘normal’ and ‘proof’ as opposed BU/normal/proof. I think BU still falls under bullion

    .. and £900 for a sotd?
Problem for the mint is that they've already reached a saturation point with the proof price. If they keep on increasing the price even less people will buy. But that means their margins will suffer. Either way they will see profits cut.
Just because the gold price has rocketed doesn't mean incomes gone up at the same rate.

Absolutely. I liked the ugly duckling of Henry VIII also, and the Charles I equestrian design. The very next scheduled release was also interesting. A teenage Edward VI.
I have to be honest, i'm not a big royalist, or even a fan of monarchs, but the history, and reviving old designs was the draw for me. But that is another reason why it was such a good series, it had different reasons to appeal to people.

They are hardly likely to admit they got it wrong and been making excess profits at the expense of customers.
However they do say that they don't always meet the right standards and will strive to do better.
BYB - I think you have done an excellent job in not only raising this issue but by the constructive and focused way you have gone about it.
Credit to the mint also in being willing to listen.
This is a case of reading between the lines and that the success of the lobbying will be seen in what they do in future.  For me the jury is still out and we'll know better in 6 months.

I think it is important to draw a distiction between proofs and historic coins which is what this thread is primarily about.
Proof coins are expensive, would I like to see them cheaper, sure why not.
Can you buy them on the second hand market cheaper, yeah sometimes.
Historic coins however - these have a different feel to them on The Royal Mint's website. It feels like they have sourced them cheap and then slapped a massive price on to simply profiteer from people that don't know better.
That's part of why I am inititiating this "investigation" and getting some feedback from the mint.
I don't begrudge any company trying to make a profit. Taking a historic coin, checking it, authenticating it and then presenting it in a information sleave/box - sure thats fine and you can charge a premium for this for customers peace of mind. There is a market for this kind of product.
What I have a problem with is that The Royal Mint will use their reputation and branding to make people think a coin is valued at a certain level just because they say so.
Flagship of the world silver, 6x bulloin (poor condition if you see the photos) for £82.50 per oz is just a blatent rip off. £270 for a completely worn victoria young head crown...total rip off.
Price those at £40 per oz and £120 per crown then I would have no problem. They are still expensive but they are not extotinate.
