My best lucky dip buy happened in 2003.
I found a lot on eBay of 'USA holiday change' dated from the 1930s onward, about $20-$30 from memory.
I saw from the picture that it was mostly quarters and dimes with the odd half dollar, nickel and cent.
The presence of the half dollars made me think that there could be something interesting, as they've not been common in circulation in the US for many years.
So out of curiosity I emailed the seller and asked if any of the quarters or dimes were dated from the 1940s or 50s. The reply was yes, several.
So I looked up the exchange rate and added about another 1/4 on and threw in a bid. I won the lot, it being a little over the exchange rate.
The coins arrived, I unboxed them and went searching through, I must have pulled out nearly two dozen silver coins, their face value being about 1/5 of the overall total.
All in all a terrific haul. No other purchase has been as lucrative nor exciting as that. I love a good treasure hunt.

Fabulous Coin - Ancient Greek Gold Stater Philip II of Macedon
I was shown this coin recently, and we got photos of it.
I got more excited seeing this fairly small coin than I get when I see most one kilo gold coins. It is sensational!

Having just uploaded the obverse photo, I have started seeing features which I did not notice when looking at the actual coin.

Charioteer driving a biga (two horse chariot), with ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΥ below.
The device under the horses' front feet is a kantharos or cantharus. (Correction: It is a tripod, although it could be a three-legged kantharos).
I will need to do some homework to completely identify this coin, including the mint.
Almost as an afterthought, I Niton tested it:

    42.504 cts = 8.5008 grams.
My "GP suspect" note is because the tester showed this. I don't believe it!

If your paying more for 2022 Sovereigns than best value, your buying from the wrong places, try here

    https://bullionhouse.co.uk/product/2022-gold-sovereign-platinum-jubilee-coin/
    https://www.hattongardenmetals.com/gold-sovereign-2022
All are cheaper than the cheapest best value sovereign, which is currently HGM https://www.hattongardenmetals.com/gold-sovereign
2022's should stay the cheapest until the 2023 sovereign comes out in a couple of months, then it will start attracting more of a premium if it follows the same pattern as previous years

One of the most confusing elements of us measurement is the Cup (used in cooking).  Whilst it means 16 tablespoons it somewhat arbitrary.
One might suppose a cup in the U.K. is smaller than a sup in the US….
Having been to Disney (under great sufferance), and seen folk having a mid morning snack of a Turkey drumstick and a litre of Coca Cola or similar, I can confirm things are frequently bigger in the US.

A couple of items arrived this morning.

From the Royal Mint, three, one gram gold bars – ready to be Christmas presents for my niece and nephews.

And an early Christmas present for myself, a well-used silver 1821 Crown with no unsightly scratches or edge knocks – a good, honest, two hundred year old, piece of history.

Not much happened in the year 1900, though apparently £1 in 1900 is equivalent in purchasing power to about £136.61 today. So based on that you'd probably have been able to buy a low end smart phone or just about a tank of fuel in your Ferrari for a mere £1, the face value of one of these 122 years ago.
