1810 Milan Napoleon Kingdom of Italy 40 Lire
NGC AU53 - 212 years old
Nice big coin weighing in at 12.9 grams
Very hard to get in AU grades
Only 4 in this grade with Only 13 grade higher in a old NGC slab
Will be up in the forum later for an exchange deal of some kind no doubt

Big thanks to @Colnago for this entry into the world × 1/4 oz run.
Not the easiest coin to get and going by a bit of research after the fact...a bargain.

Scaffstacker reacted to dicker in Sovereign experts I need help?
Hi Leon,
My best guess is that a dealer would chalk this up at around £1.3k to £1.6k - depending on eye appeal.
Private sale - I think you should aim for £850-950 if you want it for a collection rather than to sell on.
Don’t know where you are buying from but I suspect the vendor had it graded and hoped it would do a little better than MS62. For my money people spend far too much time looking at grades and not the coins themselves.
Best

Scaffstacker reacted to Leonmarsh in Sovereign experts I need help?
Hi all
Been looking at this coin for months and a little out of my depth in terms of collectability, value and so on or whether to go ahead and purchase any advice or opinions welcome
1842 first portrait MS62
For @LawrenceChard yes I have checked Google, auctions, my book, sorry for the spelling lol 🤣

In 2017 the South African Mint celebrated the 50th anniversary of the popular gold Krugerrand. On this occasion they released their first ever silver Krugerrands (all privy marked and only in proof and premium uncirculated versions), and also a one-time only release of a proof platinum Krugerrand. With a mintage of only 2,017 I am very lucky to own one of these beauties.

That’s very nice @richatthecroft and in remarkable condition for it’s 205 years of age.
It makes you wonder where it’s been all these years.
I haven’t looked but I presume MS62 puts in the top few graded?

Thank you.
I think the lighting I used to take the photo flatters the 1817 Sovereign somewhat- but it is just lighting, the photographs weren’t filtered or photoshopped- the photos below are perhaps more representative.
It was designated MS62 by NGC- lovely eye appeal 👍. I Have recently had the Sovereign re- slabbed as the old slab was scuffed.

For a few years now Platinum has been overtaken in value by gold, but obviously that has not been reflected on what is shown on the coinage! So here is a photo of Platinum, Gold and Silver (with nominal values) against the corresponding banknotes.

Scaffstacker reacted to dicker in Unknown Johnson Matthey 1oz Bar
I an pretty uncertain that this bar was created in “London”. I think it might be more likely that this was produced in the USA.
JM got out of the gold and silver refining business in about 2014, and shifted their Royston (Hertfordshire) plant away from silver and gold refining to platinum and other chemistry.
Happy to be wrong but I think that they only had casting facilities at Royston….it’s a BIG plant.

Blimey that's beyond optimistic! I saw 3 of these on the saleroom a few weeks ago. I stopped at £30 a bar Inc fees went way beyond that!

Scaffstacker reacted to Mtaybar in Gold Monitoring Thread £ GBP only
I have mostly a collection which I'm happy to hold for the long term. I've been holding off on stacking gold until the price gets back down again. I'm still watching though. Still a bit high for me to stack at.

I look at the bright side, I've just started, barely have a sovereign, couple of quarters and a handful of silver, let it crash so I can build a stack myself 🤠

Scaffstacker reacted to dicker in Shipwrecks found off Columbian coast
I forgot to post this earlier but the odd photo from ROV now making its way onto the internet.
If / when there is recovery, there will undoubtedly be coins types discovered that have never been seen before. Billions in emeralds gold and silver will be recovered but the real treasure will be numismatic insight into coin production from this period.
