1664 Charles II Gold Guinea - Any Thoughts?

Recommended Posts

Was there a one Guinea minted in 1664?

I know 2 Guinea’s exist - instantly rememberable because of the Elephant under the bust.  Something to do with the Gold being supplied from Africa I think.

Yes, the first date of guineas was 1663.

There were 4 types of 1664, 2 with elephant, and 2 without.

Stunning, but not quite a belter

I was shown this recently, and thought I would share photos and opinions of it:

... and the reverse:

Likes, dislikes?

😎

I would take a risk and offer £100 for it.

I wonder what the circular lines are that run next to and roughly parallel to the coins edge?

I'd difficult to tell from a photo but they look like they sit on the surface rather than a scratch into the coin. It doesn't quite look like the damage I imagine you'd get from a modern jewellery mount but I'm not sure.

I can't make my mind up about this one. The overall look hmm, the fields of the obverse and the fuzziness of Charles hair suggest it's been cleaned. The circular marks as highlighted by @Booky586 look distinctly odd to me. Unless that's where the edge of the foil wrapper holding the chocolate inside is? 😁

Has it been clasped in a frame or something? How are the edges? Diagonally milled - strongly evident, wonky and worn or rubbed smooth?

Well spotted!

Some idiot has taken a tool with a sharp point, and scored lines close to the rim on both sides. These scratches are very bright and shiny, which makes me think they have been done relatively recently.

I have seen coins scratched by "jewellers" in a clumsy attempt to remove solder, but this can hardly have been the motive in this case.

It is now time to reveal more:

A collage showing the circular scratch lines running round most of the coin.

I've only just noticed your errant apostrophe, it's memorable!

Since there are so many flaws with this coin, would you accept spot price for it. I think my offer is reasonable.😬👍

Third bust type VF would be 4000 and EF would be 16500 👍

With an elephant VF 6250 and VF 22500

(Spink 2019 prices )

Yes, it is third bust, no elephant (unless it's in the other room), Spink #3342.

The reverse would be an easy VF if not for all the damage.

Here are some edge shots, showing the solder and repair damage:

The Niton test result is good news though:

Showing gold content about 925, which is what I would have expected.

Also high silver content, especially as it is "Crown Gold"!
