The coin that went unsold is a significantly higher grade too
So would imagine the coin you have for sale would be 30 or less

Is this the same coin? If so, it was on auction earlier this year with starting price EUR 40 and went unsold...

    Hello Forum!
looking for some opinions on the (estimated) value of this coin. It’s a 1868 2 1/2 guilder (though the flip says 1 guilder) from the Netherlands with Willem III’s portrait. I think the condition is quite good.

i’ve found a few of these in sold status on etsy and ebay which evidently aren’t the best price indicators. In worse and similar conditions these seem to have sold between 75 and 120 euro (there are some online more expensive but these arent sold at this stage).

not the rarest, but these 2 1/2 guilders do command a decent premium in general (its 25g of .945 silver). I’m thinking in this condition it’d be around 80-100 € (70-86£ Gbp), but curious to see what the opinions are over here.

    thanks in advance!

I don't know if this played into the price itself, but I noticed that since the introduction of VAT across the EU (read that as Estonia was finally forced to enforce VAT on silver) in early July, spot for silver specifically dipped about 10%, though the price of purchasing physical silver has stayed relatively similar. Perhaps that's just a price adjustment in the sense that the buying power required for silver stays relatively similar than before VAT introduction. This is specific to EU market though, I don't know if that'd cause an effect on the global silver price, but in terms of buying physical silver from dealers, prices haven't changed that much.

I agree regarding the removal of the storage option. I inquired about this with them back in early December and they told me the following:
yes, it will return. This is still in process and estimated time is at the moment the beginning of new year. Unfortunately no exact date yet, as it takes longer than expected.    As soon as it is back, the option will be added on the website and notified via newsletter   Still waiting for the notification.   Adding to that, yes, they are reliable and very communicative. The majority of my silver purchases have come from them and I have always had a good experience.

Final update! 2 weeks ago I received the fake coin back in the post, with a different envelope and a hand-written address. I have no idea how this made it's way back to me. Maybe returned to my previous house and the new occupant repackaged and posted to me?
I called PayPal to get the case re-opened stating it had turned up after being AWOL for a month, took hostage photos with the coin in front of The Times homepage with the day's date, and posted it back to the original sender with a hand drawn smiley face on a post-it.
Just got the full refund today from PayPal!!!! JUSTICE (and I'm actually up £100 from RM's refund and PayPal's feel-sorry-for-me pay-out)
    The saga is finally over.

So, after a few replies from @LawrenceChardand @SemolinaPilchard on a couple of my first posts from yesterday, i decided to investigate other ways to photograph coins, in particular, axial lighting.
I cobbled a card frame together, found a piece of plain glass from an Asda picture frame, repositioned 2 led light panels, and job done.
    Less than an hours work.
I'll give it a proper work out later today and then make any adjustments to mkII..........
Oh, and edit time is much much less

I must say, I haven’t created this post to ‘big up’ 1/2 oz gold coins because I’m about to list 100 for sale on the forum in the near future.
It would be a great marketing ploy if I did but sadly I don’t have 100 1/2 oz gold coins.

I'm probably just adding to what's been said already.
Talking from the perspective of a small budget stacker, I don't have the budget for a 1oz or the 1/2, compared to the 1/4 l prefer the Sovereign as it commands a lower premium, fractionals are too expensive, I just wouldn't buy them for stacking. I have considered some fractionals for the sake of a minimal collection, don't really care for a full run, but I would love to have an Eagle, Krugerrand, Britannia and Maple, they would probably have to be 1/10 or 1/4. Won't do it this year as I'd rather get as many 2022 Sovereign as I can due to the different reverse, but I have considered from next year to occasionally alternate the odd Sovereign for one each of the above in 1/10 and 1/4.
Even if I could stretch my budget near the 1/2 I still wouldn't buy them for stack as the Sovereign still holds a better premium.
The half is too big for most small budget chaps and is too expensive to make sense to any big budget one. Having the money I would probably buy one to have one set with all sizes, but I wouldn't see myself interested in a second one.

    Hi Dave,

    Welcome to the forum!

Already sitting at over a kilo of silver is no mean feat. ''Small time'' or not, that's definitely a symptom of the stackers bug. Good luck kicking that habit

General consensus on collectable silver coins is... mainly opinion! In my opinion, the absolute majority of the time they are not worth it as an investment. For every collectable that increases in value, there'll be dozens of examples that dropped against their original RRP at the time of sale. So as in investment probably not. However, if you absolutely love the coin and enjoy it... then it may absolutely be the right buy for you! I'm sure a lot of the UK folks can give you better insights on the RM collectables as that's not a world that I am currently involved in.

Few things to often keep in mind when making your purchases (or at least I do) :

    - Ask yourself why you are buying. Is it for your own collection? Is it with the intent to sell for a profit (investment) or hold for longer term before selling?
    - Do you know how and where to sell according to your strategy? Do you know how to sell if you were forced to due to life circumstances? Silver and gold are great, but push comes to shove, don't necessarily cover your bills if you'd had to do so urgently.

When it comes to stacking, it helped me to put in some boundaries for my purchases to keep aligned with my stacking goal. When it comes to collecting I am more liberal in terms of the prices I pay for coins; I am personally OK with ''over paying'' a few %'s for pieces that I add to my long term collection; I have no intention of selling them anytime soon, so for me that doesn't matter too much.

Sometimes I buy coins with the purpose of re-selling or trading in the future. When that's the case, price is important. It can be hard sometimes to make the right calls and I have made plenty of mistakes in that sense. I tend to see that as me paying for a lesson

I'd argue that stacking and collecting is quite a personal journey, in the sense that objectives and opportunities are different per person. As long as you are enjoying what you are doing and are able to add to your stack/collection in a debt-free manner, you are (in my opinion) always on the right track.

    Have a prosperous day yourself!

    All the best,

    Alex

It's a valid topic to raise. I have a 1/2 oz krugerrand which I am fond of, but I do feel like in the future I'd prefer to get 2 x 1/4 oz over 1 x 1/2 oz. In terms of premiums I don't think it makes that much of a difference between 1/4 and 1/2. What does make a big difference is the liquidity of the two. I do believe it easier to sell 1/4 oz than it is to sell 1/2 oz.
Is probably true. In my native language we have a saying that's something like '' too big for the napkin, too small for the tablecloth '', which I'll liberally translate into ''too expensive for smaller stackers, not interesting enough for bigger stackers''.

I'd also say that it's kinda also a supply thing; you'll find series of coins in 1/10 and 1/4 very often, intricate / interesting designs. However, 1/2 usually just comes in the form of bullion or slightly more premium but not extraordinary type series (lunar years, Panda's,), which I presume also limits the interest of collectors in these fractions.

That's just my opinion. Be all and end all, it's nice to have at least one of the 1/2 oz's for perspective.

    Hi everybody.
I'm fairly new to silver collecting and stacking (actually didn't realise that stacking was a thing, if i'm honest). I probably have about 50oz silver, so relatively small time at the moment.
I thought that the best way to create a stack would be to collect, for instance, all years of Britannia bullion and then Maple etc etc. but i'm open to good deal if i see one.
I'd like to add silver bar at some point, but i find coins more interesting tbh.
One question though, whats the general consensus on collectable silver coins, such as the Royal Mint Music Legends or Beatrix Potter? Are they an investment, as they obviosly carry a larger premium.
Anyway, i'm looking forward to sitting back later and having a proper read through the posts and maybe even joining in a thread or 2.
Hope you all have a prosperous day

I started my stacking journey around 18 months ago by stacking Silver - 1, 2 or 3 coins at a time - whatever I could afford as a client paid an invoice - to use as a way of saving that meant I couldn't just use it to make a spur of the moment purchase, as turning it back in to cash would take some time & effort.
Not ideal, but that was all the available funds I had - as time has gone by and my business has picked up, I've been lucky enough to afford some Gold too, but the fact that I managed to fill a tube of Silver Brits blew me away - just a few years ago, the thought that I would be able to 'save' around £600 was unthinkable...
We all had to start somewhere (Even @Paul & @James32 😅) - and IMHO, a handful of Silver 1oz coins / bars is better than a handful of nothing... 😏
We can all offer advice to help you make the most of your available funds, but at the end of it all - you do you 👍

For what it's worth, the photographs are not great but I think the box is genuine and certificate looks good, and the coin could very well be too. Really would only be guessing without better pics or the coin in hand. If weight diameter and thickness are within range, then you are probably OK based on the year of issue( some older ones could be genuine gold but fake sovereigns)
You're scales are likely not accurate enough to be honest, so you're only option is to take to a dealer/high end Jewelers for testing..
Honestly if I was in your position, I'd return coin for refund as you didn't receive a 10/10 coin, what you received is a coin that's been handled more times than Jordan's chest, unless the finger prints are your's??
You have 30 days to return, even though you left positive feedback 👀 lesson 1 has been learned 👍 only leave feedback when happy.
You're heart will never be in the purchase now so best to get out of the situation whilst you can.

    Hi, @benj.
The town hallmark with double headed crowned eagle it is for sure for Kamenetz-Podolsk, before 1880, when the town mark has changed.
Kamenetz-Podolsk is actually in Ukraine, but was before in the Kingdom of Poland until 1648 (this is why crowned double eagle mark),  when after a long civil war, the Poland-Lithuanian Union has dissolved and part of Poland and Ukraine was integrated in Russian Empire.
The number 84 is showing the purity of silver. 84 zolotniki = 84/96 = 875/1000 silver.
The three letters stamped are the maker mark, difficult to know the name now. After 1700 was mandatory stamped the year under the maker mark. On your goblet is missing, meaning it was made before 1700.
From all these informations, we can deduct that your goblet was made in Kamenetz-Podolsk between 1648 and 1700 using silver .875.
Your town mark of Kamenetz-Podolsk can be seen on this page: https://www.925-1000.com/Frussia_city_02.htlm.
About the balance shown on first stamp, I can only speculate, I can not find any informations.
    Very nice goblet!🤗
    Stefan.
