watchesandwhisky got a reaction from jultorsk in Gold Monitoring Thread £ GBP only
Without wanting to be a downer in this exciting time for many, a few observations...
When doing some early morning shopping on my day of today I heard three builders walking round Tesco's talking about buying gold bullion, when I'm at work I regularly hear a radio ad saying "golds gone galactic" and offering to buy your gold.. When delivering the mail I recently saw a leaflet drop to over 800 houses offering to buy any gold and silver or old watches and medals.. When I was delivering mail at a residential park home two blokes were going door to door trying to buy gold.
This is precisely what I saw happen back in 2012 before a rather large price reversal of 35% ish over the next two years.
A lot has happened since 2012, past performance is not indicative of future performance ect - Just an observation.

Or maybe, an established member is looking to boost their eBay sale and doesn't want to do the legwork!
Possibly an older and soddier skeptic here

Just wanted to say its nice to see a hallmark question from established member and not a passing account looking for other people to do the legwork to boost the value of their eBay sale (probably)
Yes I'm a sceptical old sod.

I would not be interested, reminds me of "shill" bidding. Its a tactic where a seller tries to extract the highest price you will pay via a method of fake bids. Personally I would not buy in this way to start with but would reject the offer.

Must assume is a 1 oz not a 1/100oz🙄
Minting of 15000 means when they sell this one will only have 14999 left.

Una is obviously a very in demand coin still. But auctions can so easily be be fixed , Not that we ever would but two of us here who both own unas could list one and both bid against each other until it was over 100k, hell why not make it 200k?!?, a new record! we then make payment and split the 6% commission cost. For a mere few grand each our coins now have a past sales history of over 200k. Now we list somewhere else with a 160k reserve and hope a wealthy buyer thinks they are getting a bargain.
I think the old saying "somethings worth what someone's willing to pay for it" is completely true. And auctions of such high valued collectables are bound to be full of corruption, as is playing at high stakes poker, pool, or many other high stakes transactions.
That's not to say this isn't completely genuine. It is the most in demand recent issue coin in history as far as im aware and the sky is the limit really. But that's why I cant and don't trust auction results.

watchesandwhisky reacted to Foster88 in Do you know who ‘old coppernose’ is?
I thought this might be of interest to some of you.
Do you know who ‘old coppernose’ is?
I’ll give you a clue, he was the second Tudor monarch, he had six wives, a chronic jousting injury and by contemporary writings he also had a terrible temper.
I’m talking about Henry VIII of course. But why was he called ‘old coppernose’?
Well, towards the end of his reign (1544-1551) the country was in the financial terrible. It sounds familiar, I know. Henry VIII’s wars with Scotland and France had cost the King’s coffers a small fortune.
During what is known as The Great Debasement, gold coinage was reduced from 23ct to 20ct and silver coinage was reduced from 92.5% (Sterling) to a mere 25%.
So why was he known as old coppernose? Well the silver coinage was mostly copper by the end of his reign and as the coins were circulated the high points of the coins, naturally, the obverse and (his nose) wear first. Ultimately giving old Henry VIII a copper nose. It continued into the early reign of his son, Edward VI and it wasn’t until Elizabeth I that it was stopped and a privy mark added to earlier coins. It got so bad that traders in mainland Europe refused English coinage.
If any of you want to learn more, the programme Digging For Britain series 1 episode 6 towards the end tells the story better than I ever could.
