I was arrested after trying to pay for petrol with a £20 COIN! Moment cops quiz driver in 'legal tender' row

  • EXCLUSIVE: A man was arrested for attempting to pay for petrol with a £20 coin
  • He took legal action that led to him being awarded £4,000

This is the moment a driver who tried to pay for petrol with a £20 coin was arrested by police at a BP garage.

The man, who goes by YouTube name Eye Spy Audit, claims he was arrested by Cleveland Police for making off without payment for using a £20 Royal Mint coin, even though he 'never left the store'.

He took legal action after the arrest, and has now been awarded £4,000.

@stefffana with your coins and this guy’s free time could start a whole new series.

’Got Arrested at Thorpe Park’

’Detained at B&Q’

£4k off £20 isn’t too bad either

That's instant 20000% return

If we do the right thing this time, we might have to do the right thing again next time.

Not worth it at all.

Just Google the implications for the simple act of being arrested.

It can have an effect on your credit rating, international travel and much more.

Is it worth it to save £3 when you spend £20 on fuel?

Even when exonerated at the courts? Then he's got many more legal actions to take.

Yeah, good luck with all the aggro getting your full PNC record removed.

I mean, look it's possible but it's such aggro.

There's a full business of that kind of lawfare in this country. Also we're a common law country and the judges will have a say on these issues. That being said people are right to feel disappointed when the courts give counterintuitive sentences, but you'll need to read into their reasoning and interpretation of the laws. Some laws can be quite ambivalent giving judges chances to improvise, and this is mainly because MPs don't phrase the laws themselves, but rely on advisors and civil servants to draft them

Shades of Piers Corbyn's cash stunt:

That said, as much as I approve of social media stunts like this, you have to pick your battles. Paying with silver is for something much further down the road once/if we make enough progress. People should address the immediate threats for their social media awareness. This isn't it. Frankly I think we should all be making cash stunt videos and make the movement viral, then maybe we can move onto silver.
