    Me too! Touchers unite!
The pleasure of owning coins is both visual and tactile, 'holding history in your hand', to quote an oft' used phrase. You won't get that (shouldn't?) with a modern proof, so grade away I say!
The dilemma with older coins, I feel, is the collector's paranoia that he/she has bought a fake/counterfeit coin. One should be able to spot a fake, I hear from the back, but these forgers were clever buggers and can fool even the experts at times. Buying a fake 1887 quintuple for example is going to hurt. So I can understand a preference for graded coins where the possibility of fakes are concerned, assuming of course the graders will stand by their evaluation.

I don't look at it as Crypto vs Gold, I think it's better as Crypto and Gold.
Then the individual decides on their risk appetite and puts both into their portfolio in a % according to that risk appetite.
As long as the bulk of your fiat is tied into whatever you believe in, go for it, you could also include cars in the mix, some of those have grown in value nicely, heck I've even got a 1956 jukebox in our hallway I bought for £120 over 40 years ago - it's all about assets you can both enjoy and, with luck, seeing an increase in value is a great bonus.

Roy reacted to Pete in Royal Mint Gold Investment Performance Chart "Factual Comparison"
I think their analysis is biassed for obvious marketing purposes.
It shows gold outperforming property by almost double.
Twenty years ago if you bought a chunk of gold it would have cost you £200 per ounce.
Today it has increased in value by about a factor of 6
I checked house prices in my area and over the same period the price of property has also increased by about a factor of 5.
Maybe taking an average of property prices over the entire country this figure would be a lot less and nearer to their graph.
That's the big problem with selective charts without underlying data as you can always find statistics in various categories with wide exceptions that support or oppositely counteract your argument.
Gold could take a dive of 10% tomorrow but your house is more likely to go up.

It wasn't your regular house clearance sweet tin either, the coin was mixed in with "several British hammered gold coins."  😀

40 years ago young people saved money into a building society account then bought a house. Today that's virtually impossible so they gamble their money on cryptos hoping to get rich quick and get a deposit for a house. But almost everyone else is doing the same . 20% is bought by desperate youngsters using credit. The questions is what will happen in a crash ? The 20% will be in major trouble.  I can sleep easy every night on 50 grand worth of gold. 50 grand in cryptos would keep me awake all night  . I and many olduns actually have a few bitcoin etc for a littler flutter , a bit of fun , but we won't be wiped out on a crash.

Roy got a reaction from SVcollector in 1917 Gold Sovereign London Mint.
Well, I hope it was a 'S' 'cos I'd be gutted if it were a London sov! Would complete my 1917 collection.
Chaps, Chris @SVcollector lists a 1917 London graded as one of his stolen coins. Do you think it's possible that this coin could've been bust out the slab and sold as bullion to Atkinsons?
Surely, the staff would know what they were looking at?
Just fantasy, but a possible lead in a case that seems to have gone cold?
