The horses tail looks a little different to a couple of reference examples (but I am being picky)
The tail is an important detail to study when looking for fakes among the 1887 range. You will generally see abnormalities in this area in fakes.

The Australian sovereigns do seem to exhibit variation in this physical property. I can't understand why as the dies were made in England. Perhaps the Aussies had some leeway in the production/procurement of the outer bands?
I tend to check for diameter the old fashioned way, using a standard slit such as was used on the Victorian sovereign balances. I would imagine this would have a larger tolerance than a micrometer but I have found many Aussie sovereigns that fail this test.

The nexrt logical question is "Am I FDC?"
Sounds like to need to be sent to NGC, although you may not enjoy being slabbed.

My 5 coin set from @ChardsCoinandBullionDealer was supposed to have been despatched last Monday but I have received no tracking number nor any communication whatsoever. I have emailed them and am waiting for a reply. I don’t see why I shoukd have to chase them. Totally unnecessary levels of stress caused.

The last email I received said the estimated date for Chards w/c was 27th Feb!

I'd like to be able to add some natural looking tone to old cleaned .925 British coins

Thanks for the guesses! For what it's worth, I thought it looked like an AU55. There was quite a range but it seems we all thought it'd be less than its actual grading:

Scandalous, considering how hard they tend to be with even slight hairlines, cleaning etc with sovereigns.
They certainly haven't considered all the wear/ damage / file marks around the rim

Worn, underweight sovereigns were constantly being taken out of circulation at the bank level and sent to the BoE for exchange for newer, full weight coins. It is impossible to know how many have survived, only an estimated comparison made against other years by observation in real life scenarios.

That's a good question, no idea! Maybe just a fleck of metal from a previous strike?
I'm tempted to keep it and get it graded as an error (assuming it's significant enough an error? the coin is pretty tiny as it is...) but there are two other duff coins in the set and RM won't replace those unless I send the entire set back
ah yes, I'd forgotten it was a tiny quarter😁

Before I send it back, is it possible that this is a struck-thru error on the centre of my memorial quarter sovereign?
Yes, but what on earth got between the coin and the die?

A very good question. A ratio based on real world buying costs will give a very different result to one based on selling prices. I suppose it depends on what the reasons for swapping are for the two parties concerned.
There have been a few such swaps on this forum in the recent past, maybe the perties concerned will turn up and answer your question?

No I would say not, although there is a hint of a possible gap between 2 lines but it doesn't go all the way across. The relative dimensions of the lines and gaps aren't correct for a genuine Ansell.
The ribbon edge of a normal 59 is quite broad and rounded, I suspect this one has either a defect in that detail or someone has been at it with a scalpel trying to form a gap!
@LawrenceChardwill have seen many more than me in his time.
compare with a real one

Not many, about 90 - 100

Just received my 5 proof sovereign set, but I need some cash and have to sell them. Is there a place to sell them in the forum? or anywhere you guys can recommend?
I can recommend selling to me but I must warn you the price of these has halved since release😎

If it was only 'imperfection', I would be delighted. See my picture.
The greasy smear is ridiculous.

'm about to be sent an item from the UK to Europe and the seller (not from TSF) gave me a shipping quote which seemed quite high. I inquired about it and they told me they must use DHL because the Royal Mail International services were suspended following a cyberattack.
yes it's true, there's a warning about it on their website. If you want to check DHL https://www.parcel2go.com/

Most quarters have some inperfection in my experience. I count 70's for these as a bonus.
