  1. The tail is an important detail to study when looking for fakes among the 1887 range. You will generally see abnormalities in this area in fakes. The Australian sovereigns do seem to exhibit variation in this physical property. I can't understand why as the dies were made in England. Perhaps the Aussies had some leeway in the production/procurement of the outer bands? I tend to check for diameter the old fashioned way, using a standard slit such as was used on the Victorian sovereign balances. I would imagine this would have a larger tolerance than a micrometer but I have found many Aussie sovereigns that fail this test.
  2. Sounds like to need to be sent to NGC, although you may not enjoy being slabbed.
  3. The last email I received said the estimated date for Chards w/c was 27th Feb!
  4. I'd like to be able to add some natural looking tone to old cleaned .925 British coins
  5. Scandalous, considering how hard they tend to be with even slight hairlines, cleaning etc with sovereigns. They certainly haven't considered all the wear/ damage / file marks around the rim
  6. Worn, underweight sovereigns were constantly being taken out of circulation at the bank level and sent to the BoE for exchange for newer, full weight coins. It is impossible to know how many have survived, only an estimated comparison made against other years by observation in real life scenarios.
  7. Very difficult to grade a coin unless you've seen some very good examples but IMO this should get a details grade, XF or might make AU details, or about 50
  8. A very good question. A ratio based on real world buying costs will give a very different result to one based on selling prices. I suppose it depends on what the reasons for swapping are for the two parties concerned. There have been a few such swaps on this forum in the recent past, maybe the perties concerned will turn up and answer your question?
  9. Another day of stress for me. Despite tracking as "out for delivery" DHL hasn't turned up.☹️
  10. No I would say not, although there is a hint of a possible gap between 2 lines but it doesn't go all the way across. The relative dimensions of the lines and gaps aren't correct for a genuine Ansell. The ribbon edge of a normal 59 is quite broad and rounded, I suspect this one has either a defect in that detail or someone has been at it with a scalpel trying to form a gap! @LawrenceChardwill have seen many more than me in his time. compare with a real one
  11. I can recommend selling to me but I must warn you the price of these has halved since release😎
  12. Can't believe it, my 5 coin is in the post according to the RM! Here goes 24 hours of stress about what condition they will be in😅🤞
  13. and lick it off just before sending away..
  14. They were always re-engraving the portrait and reverse for new dies. It happened quite often, not annually by any means but often enough for people to notice and for the differences to be documented. There is still the odd difference cropping up from time to time.
  15. The greasy smear is ridiculous. I see you spotted my "fat finger" moment😁
  16. yes it's true, there's a warning about it on their website. If you want to check DHL https://www.parcel2go.com/
  17. Most quarters have some inperfection in my experience. I count 70's for these as a bonus.
  18. Yes but I can't believe it's over 4 years old.
  19. There's one in Blackpool apparently 😎
