  1. Just in terms of wear of the coin, both sides are around VF
  2. well below spot (£600/kg) so I would have thought ideal for someone producing silver castings.
  3. I was the same at first but when I looked in greater detail and compared the photos with ones of known grade, it caused me to upgrade my opinion.
  4. i would agree, EF, maybe a touch better on a good day
  5. That's how central banks inflate debt away
  6. Cue lots of gold for sale on the forum, but who can spot the high before the inevitable fall?
  7. I did get told an interesting fact while on to CS today. She said they hold the coin at arm's length and if a defect is visible by naked eye they accept it as defective. Otherwise, it's good! A bit "industrial" IMO😁
  8. This happened to me a few years ago although I am convinced he did try to scam me and wasn't simply a confused old timer. You can usually tell by their initial attitude and how quickly they accuse you of being the scammer, not a word of there being any possibility they made an error, which is easily checked at their end. He had even changed address without telling ebay so the coin I returned went to the wrong address!
  9. I am truly appalled by the RM's incompetence and complete disregard for their customers. This morning I phoned CS to to return my 4-coin set which, after 3 weeks in my hands is still not showing in my account, other than the "placeholder" which those bought via account managers have been shown as since launch. OK she sorted it, but then asked why I still have outstanding "orders" for a 3-coin set and a full sov, still showing as "placeholders". "Oh" she said, "I will check up on those, give me a few moments as nothing is coming up when I detail search them". True enough, a couple of minutes later she came back "I'm afraid those haven't been minted yet and we have no information about when they will be. Feel reassured they will be sent to you as soon as they are minted" !!! I am truly gobsmacked, she did apologise profusely but that only emphasises how bad they are, she sounded like she is no stranger to having to apologisse to disatisfied customers. So, 4 and a half months after selling them, they still haven't minted them all. What a bunch of cowboys.
  10. I think he said he needs to get the developer to sort it.
  11. It's patently obvious she's not a youngster. It would be a better depiction if they did away with the modern trend of very angular features, smooth them off a bit.

    Random Rant

I always found it useful to phone my branch before attempting something like this but that was in the days of actually having a local branch so maybe irrelevant now. This was especially useful if there was going to be any cash involved. I would imagine this is where banking with First Direct comes in useful. They used to be a telephone/postal only execution bank and you can still get through to them by phone straight away and the CS staff are very good. Always managed to sort any issues immediately.
  13. Looks like it yes although I didn't know you could get bullion 1/4 sovs, you learn every day.
  14. Tinfoil and bicarb works well apparently, I've only ever used EZ dip or whatever it's called. I make my own up. If you use silver cloth or another contact method, you are sure to add some scratches however fine.
  15. There is also one with a 90 degree rotation of Britannia, or is it 270 degrees? much rarer I'm told😉

Fixed that for you😃 This round however is hideous.
  18. The tail is an important detail to study when looking for fakes among the 1887 range. You will generally see abnormalities in this area in fakes. The Australian sovereigns do seem to exhibit variation in this physical property. I can't understand why as the dies were made in England. Perhaps the Aussies had some leeway in the production/procurement of the outer bands? I tend to check for diameter the old fashioned way, using a standard slit such as was used on the Victorian sovereign balances. I would imagine this would have a larger tolerance than a micrometer but I have found many Aussie sovereigns that fail this test.
