What do you mean, "then diffed them to find differences..."? Curious.

I buy them at my LCS, not paying a piece but at weight price. I buy them when he has them available. The last weeks he has no 90% silver at all, the demand is high and nobody is selling it ...

@Divmad
My advice would be to buy sovereigns as close to spot that you can.
In order of preference I’d buy in this order:
1st: Joint 1st Victoria Shield obverse sovereigns.
1st: Joint 1st George V branch mint sovereigns, Canada, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and South Africa.
2nd: Gillick sovereigns, 1957-1968.
3rd: 2022 sovereign both proof and bullion, also 2002 and 2012.
The above is just my opinion of course but particularly George V branch mint sovereigns are somewhat overlooked.
I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the above.
If I was just starting out right now I’d buy as many 2022 bullion sovereigns as I could afford.

I prefer the Queen Victoria Young Head Shield back Sovereigns, with die numbers.
Unless you are planning to sell it online or to the United States of America , avoid slabs.

I've just completed a date run of Gillick head sov' s. Only ten coins, a nice little set. You could do worse

Plus about £3,000,000 worth of mid-Victorian sovereigns to pay the US for the 'Alabama' compensation in 1870. They would have been melted down too, and they were recent, full weight coins as specified by the US.
-
Divmad reacted to GoldStatue in Collecting Sovereigns
Yes the WWI sovereigns were sent to the US to pay for the war effort, at the time it was US policy to melt foreign currency down so very little of it survived.
For the Victorian era sovereigns people know the mintages but basically guess the survival rate, they had a different attitude to coins back then so they were used as currency or put in jewellery and not generally looked after like the coins of the modern era.

WWI basically killed them off as a coin in circulation in the UK and then we left the gold standard in the 1930's, which decoupled the intrinsic gold value from the value of the pound.

No, if we are holding stock was spot goes from £1350 to £1150, we make a "paper" loss of £200 per ounce on our stocks, with the same in reverse when gold goes up.
There is no way we could make this up with higher premiums. If we increased premiums from say 3% to 23%, we would wait a long, long, time before we sold anything. Our premiums are relatively unaffected by actual price levels, and much more by supply and demand. Even then, it would take a big change for us to shift our premiums by more than about 1%. As a dealer who "makes a market", we need volume trade, preferably in both directions, to operate profitably. There are times when all goes quiet, and we just ride these out. Having a numismatic side, and a wide range of stock and "products" helps out.
If we can keep purchases and sales in approximate balance, then we make our money by trading the premium, rather like a casino or bookmaker.
If we sell an ounce that we bought when spot was £1350, for £1150 plus 2%, then buy another ounce at £1150, we are happy.
As gold has increased in price more than it has decreased in the last 50+ years, then our stock-holding account will be in profit on a long term basis. I don't go out and celebrate when gold goes up £100, and neither do I think about jumping off Blackpool Tower when it goes down £100.

As an alternative to the Lithium mania, may I suggest Bushveld Minerals, bmn.ln on AIM, as the future leading fully integrated Vanadium redox battery manufacturer.

Not sure about the 2017. N Ireland looks like a mans profile looking at Britannia's bum! Although I like them all, my favourite is the 2007, by a whisker over the charioteer of 1997. Looking outside the box the De Saulles design on the 1902 Florin is superb.

Divmad reacted to juansanto7 in Silver Monitoring Thread £ (GBP) only.
I think inflation is happening in the supermarkets but in disguise. Some of the products I normally have increased the price by around .£0.20 (one french product actually went up by £0.50 in increments of £0.25 in the last 6 months). Other products, price remained the same, packaging became bigger but product inside is around 10%-12.5% less weight. The government for example uses certain items and services to check the inflation but leaves out things like rents out. For example rents in my area have gone from £900 to £1300 for a 2 bedroom house in 4 years. Price of a similar property went from £200K to £300K in the same 4 years period. Is that is not inflation?
I think it is explained below

Third time lucky...!!!
The first 1879 20 francs coin I bought from France, was returned as it was junk grade!
The second 1879.....................I bought from France, is still lost in West Africa!!!
Congratulations 😃 here go to ATS Bullion, who have sourced me one, and an 1871, and they have arrived! (Anchor, not barred anchor)
I think it’s worth giving ATS Bullion a bit of a special mention here....
I have used them in the past, and their customer service has been better than ANY other dealer I have used.
The above two coins only cost about 6% over spot plus postage...for UK buyers that knocks seven bells out of the big dealers over here!
The best bit..I emailed them a ‘coins wanted list’ last year, and they kept it...! I got an email out of the blue asking if I still wanted the coins on the list, as they now have some in stock..what fantastic customer service.
I have now sent a revised list to them and a big thank you 😊.
Its not often I give a free plug to a dealer but on this occasion they deserve it..
