A Golden 50th Dilemma: No 1973 Sovereigns? Now What?

Hey Gold Buffs,

ll start off by saying, I might be prospecting in the wrong mine here, if I am, moderators, I apologise.

Got a quick one for you. A mate is turning the big 5-0 this year, and I thought, "A gold sovereign would be perfect!" Only snag? I find out that no sovereigns were minted in his birth year of 1973—except a second-tier Isle of Man version, which feels about as genuine as a £3 note. (maybe harsh, but not what I'm after)

He's not a gold bug, but a sovereign would have meant something. A gold bracelet just won't do. So, I'm stumped. Any suggestions for a date-specific, classy alternative?

Cheers for the help

Maybe you can find a 1973 Krugerrand.  That was about the only bullion coin in large scale production at the time.

The Sovereign is the quintessentially British coin.  It has a German queen on the front, an Italian waiter on the back, and half of them were made in Australia.

Thank you for that

Well, if he's not a gold-bug then just the fact it's a '73 Sovereign might be enough.  Could argue that the IoM is a bit unique compared to the standard sovereign.

Fair point

If you don't mind the premium, you can get them.  BBP also have them at about the same price.

There are some nice 1973 sets, maybe the South African 1 pound?
Or do what I do, I was born in 1972, another year with no sovereigns, so I stack 1872 which is a common year and easy to get at a decent price.
This was my treat for my 50th, from myself of course

There is a 1973 Bahamas Gold Proof Independence $50 Coin that might suit. I have one of these and really like it. Its 50% gold so you get a nice chunky coin for the roughly the cost of a 1/4 oz.

Wanted: 2006 1oz and 1/4 oz Gold Year of the Dog coins from the Perth Mint

Personally I'd consider buying them a 2023 Coronation bullion sovereign - after all, it will be their own Golden Jubilee sovereign.

I turned 50 a few years ago and used it as a justifiable excuse to buy whatever gold coin minted in the year I turned 50 that I liked the look of, and could afford.

My godson has just turned 18, and to mark the occasion I've bought him a 2023 sovereign rather than a 2005.
