That’s a nice coin! Looks like it sold. Someone obviously believes in it! Who bought it??!! Own up!!!

I have no good knowledge on the full sovereign varieties, so is the value about right?

It wasn't me, but in this grade NVF I would say £700-£900 is a realistic value.

What do people think is happening with this coin. Would you say it just from light that makes is seem like something behind the words to the right side of the coin.

Maybe some Egyptian Hieroglyphics!  Sorry, I can’t help….

Seeing the other side could be insightful for this one.

The other side is normal with nothing standing out

Looking at it again I think the die has clashed with the collar. If you look closely I think I can lines running from the curved mark to the outer edge of the die where the collar reeds have scratched the die. See similar example below:

This doesn't look like an error to me at first glance. Has this coin been previously in a mount?

This looks like a graded coin from the plastic clips. Would be interested to see what grade it has now.

I think you are probably right.  Still an interesting coin to own @Spyder .

Some extra photos as I have the coin in hand now.  It is a 1863, first year of die numbers but this has none as the numbers were added to coins in late 63.

This coin is keeper for sure as I have not seen any other sovereign like this.

Happy Christmas to you all.

I wonder what the forum makes of this date error in my 1847 sovereign, any ideas?

I’ve never been impressed with date stamping on Victoria Young heads - alignment sometimes seems all over the place, and to me every one could be a variety!  Only my opinion. Anyway here’s my 1843 hopefully showing a better ‘4’…..

There’s a rabbit instead of a four..IMG_9601.jpeg.71e533ffe43488af194f14599637270a.jpeg

Interesting suggestion. The four does look like a rabbit! The US like to give strange names to variations. Look at their bugs bunny coin from 1955…..the Franklin half dollar…
