By the looks of it, gold is rising but the pound is dropping against the dollar so it's a double whammy

I have a token holding in silver -just in case- but, quite frankly, it's a waste of time. Happy to eat my gold if silver has a sustained and sensible rise but it really seems to be absolutely no store of value against inflation and is only bought by people who like the feeling of having PM volume and super low entry points with no regard for any sensible strategy. Most shills only mention silver because it gets hits and likes because it's accessible to everyone. Gold alienates most people because it's too expensive for them to be part of that gang. Again, happy to eat my gold.

I don't know of many other things, other than gold,  that can still have a store of value after 2000 years and where the real value of that has been maintained. Surely it is this property that makes gold 'magical' over all other metals.
The USD is a fiat currency that has lost 95% of its real value over the past 100 years or so. Only gold has maintained its real value over this time.

The issue with comparing it to the debt is that we aren't on a gold standard so it's not relevant.
The price of gold is worth what someone will pay for it. Right now I think $2000 is about what someone would pay for it. No one will spend $10,000 or even $5000 for 1oz of gold.

Nice thing about the Sigma as that it can also help you when selling.  Buyers seem a bit more at ease and I think appreciate it when I put a coin or bar on it.  It isn't inexpensive but if you are going to be investing substantial money into PMs it is another tool you can use to check what you are buying.  I also like that it can read through plastic mint sealed coins and bars without damage to the packaging.

I have a Sigma on the way. If you are buying regular physical gold/silver for a long time to come, no matter the quantity, it is a wise investment. Remember, you can sell the Sigma just as quickly as you bought it should you need to release the funds (for almost the same amount).

Prophecy got a reaction from Magritte in Central banks are net buyers of gold
In times like this, central banks usually are net buyers of gold.
I still believe there has to be a reason why Gordon Brown announced the bulk sale before it happened. There has to be a cunning reason.... right? (I believe the money raised was invested in a higher return asset but why announce the sale?! it immediately depressed the sale price when he eventually sold!)
There are also rumours (mostly assumptions based on rumours) that China actually has 10x the amount of reserve gold because they mine the living hell out of it straight to reserve. Strategy against the dollar in the future? Why not! They'd be silly NOT to do that based on their persuasion and position. Either way, you can assume all 'privately' held gold in China is the CCPs to 'patriotically' 'appropriate' through 'indirect' methods at any time because Communism (not like US 1934). But that's another topic entirely and probably not for this forum.

I hope to sell them before 2050.
But it s really genuinely beautiful ; sometimes I get upset to pay a lot of premium for an average-looking coin but that one is well-deserved.
I also many times feel that you really like or dislike a coin only after manipulating it in hand and looking at it with a magnifier. Sometimes you expect a coin to he a bit ugly on photo but you like it once in hand - or vice versa.
Does this happen to all of you ?

A really fascinating thread. I own a 1911 20 Francs Marianne Rooster restrike which I’ve adopted as my “lucky coin”. I love the exceptionally beautiful laureate bust of Marianne on the obverse of the coin. However, I’ve stopped short of stacking the franc because of the low .900 gold purity but still regard them as highly collectible coins.

So how else do you explain the recent falls other than in direct reaction to business suspension and lockdowns, killing earnings and economic activity.  What do the markets follow if not the economy, in your view?

I wasn't going to chime in on this thread, all the acronyms and charts make me think of sunny afternoons stuck sat around a large table with other folk wearing over priced silk ties wishing I was rolling on the floor with the happy Labrador outside; it's headache inducing. However, as someone who doesn't and never has actively traded in the markets I must ask; how can projections over the worth of commodities/equities etc be made reliably using data from trends in the markets during times of such unpredictability? I know any given weekday suffers from unpredictability but a global economic (almost) shutdown, a maybe it is maybe it isn't deadly pandemic, military movements covered by questionable stories, mass protests worldwide only stymied by social distancing rules, mass currency 'printing' and hugely bloated housing and debt bubbles all going on at the same time...to plot a chart and say "well it's obvious isn't it?" seems unlikely at best, unless you happen to be a major string puller of course. I'm not disparaging anyone's comments, thoughts or advice just wondering my own thoughts in writing...for me, times like this suggest hedging into something real, or tangible at least.

I would definitely opt for Sovereign. It has history attached to it and it is of cultural value in my opinion. I'll give you a simple example , though you may find it might not be of real value in the UK.
In Romania, a new international PM dealer opened their business recently (in January I think). I won't give their name because they are not worth it. They sold historical and modern gold coins at excellent prices in the beginning. They had a 4% premium for standard 6.45 g coins, even lower for some Austrian coins. And likewise excellent premiums for other bigger coins. Except for the British Sovereign. The premium for it was a lot higher since the beginning - 8%. All premiums went silly high in a few months after the opening.
What I am trying to point out is that the Sovereign might be worth well more than bullion value at least in some other parts of the world.

Getting a foothold in gold so you have a hedge with the forthcoming economic situation after this pandemic is a better idea than most outside this forum think.
There is a significant chance that inflation is going to happen that is tangible to the average person and there is a significant chance that the world vs China (CCP) is going to affect things too in whatever form that takes.
If you only have enough each month for a fractional coin you are going to get hit by premium in the long run if you are just after bullion. You could alleviate this by investing what you have each month into something like BullionVault (not an ETF!), so you have skin in the gold game. Then, when you have enough in there for a lower premium 1ozt gold coin you can cash out and buy that. Rinse and repeat. Think hard about the premiums. I think it's a shame that fractional gold punishes those who cannot afford or just don't want standard 1ozt bullion all the time but that's how the market works unfortunately.
Either way, dealer premiums on physical are high at the moment so you could wait for things to settle before getting a coin or two without losing out on the price movement by doing the above.
    Just my opinion of course.

Visited my safety deposit box today and put the recently acquired Gold with the rest of the Gold stack. Don't visit Safety Deposit box that often maybe once a year and took opportunity to take some photos. Gold bullion occupying 25% space in the box the remainder family jewellery. Still enough room in the box to add another 40 oz Gold in Royal Mint tubes to finish off Queens Beasts series.
Gold bullion square red box total 74.25 oz.
