    Evening all
New member found forum via youtube had an interest for a few years, looking at stacking as a way to hold funds for the long term as well as expanding the coin collection, plan at the moment for a little as often as I can. Don't have a system sussed as yet I'm just buying a different 1oz bullion coin when I get one of each I like thinking may look at bars who knows. Also try to pick up old crowns etc if i can.

    Good evening Silver Forum community,
I am a newbie in the Forum! I have been collecting coins since I was a teenager (thanks to my grandpa), getting into the silver and gold one since 2014. I would say I am more a collector than a silver/gold hoarder, although the current times may be asking for a bit of silver/gold stacking!
Happy to learn more from you and have great interactions! Have a pleasant weekend!

Hello from the US.  I'm a long-time closet stacker.  My wife, bless her heart, has no idea.  It's all for her though, so that makes it ok?  😬

    Hello All,
I just got into stacking last year, bought a 25 tube of 2021 silver Britannia's. Quickly then bought the 2022 Gold Platinum Jubilee Proof Sovereign. And for Christmas my Nieces, Nephews and God kids got 1oz Britannia's.
I think I am interested in stacking as a way to potentially pass wealth on to my family. The collecting side, I am not too sure about, but I am quite a big fan of Her Maj, and feel like the Platinum Jubilee is a massive event, and the fact she won't be around for too long has me thinking this is a good time to buy collectables. The announced SOTD Sovereign has me very interested, I'll see if I can buy one in the queue, if not I don't think I'll be too upset. My next purchase after I'll try to get a SOTD or Proof of the new Monarch.
My goals, to see if I can get a good 10% of wealth in PMs, probably UK coins, and a good mix of silver (annoying VAT) and gold. Silver will be Britannia's, but I can't decide between gold 1/4oz Britannia's or full Sovereigns, and probably will do half and half. I am not too worried about the premiums on 1/4oz Britannia's. I like the divisibility, and the ability to be able to buy more regularly (averaging up and down the fiat price).
Anyway, I've enjoyed the YT videos, and pleased to see such an active forum.
    Best, MC

    Hi All,
I Inherited a small coin collection just over a month ago, and in the process of researching the contents I unwittingly fell down the silver rabbit hole. What began as a passing interest quickly turned into a bit of an obsession.
I then proceeded down a path I suspect many have trodden before me. Bullion by Post, Atkinson's, eBay and now a hundred or so ounces later, Here. I seriously regret not finding here first.
Anyhow, looking forward to continuing to grow the stack and reading my way through the old posts. Seems like friendly place.
    Cheers, Dan

Currently I'm of the opinion that buying silver doesn't hold anything over buying gold. I'm mainly looking at wealth conservation and not on profit, but I cannot ignore the feeling of losing 19+% the moment I'm leaving the store.
I'll still hold onto what I have, in case of a silver to the moon scenario. I'm seriously contemplating to invest into paper silver, but I'll need to follow ETCs for a while.

    Hi all,
new member from UK here. I’m considering investing in gold (or metals in general) to protect capital. I hope to find a lot of info here how to do it right.
In the past I had episode with collecting coins. But bullion is something completely new to me. I’ve already read few threads and like what I see 😁

Hey all 😀 I'm new here to the forum. I'm mainly here to check out the trade section as I want to purchase second hand silver at competitive prices. I currently own a few ounces that I bought from Atkinson's Bullion a few weeks ago 😎

Hi, New here, just been listening to Backyard Bullion who put me in touch with the forum. I'm recuperating from a foot operation over the next week so spending my time do research. We've been invest in gold and silver and so now want to make savings buying some vat free purchases at last! Great to see this forum exists and looking forward to learning and buying. Any advice is welcome as I've never been that good with forums in general so will hopefully work it out as I go along. Thanks, HANDF (Stands for Harry and Fenella)

I am talking only about me and my reasons when I am answering your question. But I am sure that more than 50% of silver stackers are the same.
I am still buying silver because:
    1. I really love this metal with an ancestral use history. It is beautiful and shiny, with an unique feeling in hand.
    2. It is affordable to buy constantly small quantities.
    3. Even I am selling sometimes from my silver, I am using that money to buy another silver in another shapes, for my joy.
    4. When selling silver, can be recovered from premium on second hand market.
    5. When I am buying silver, I am buying only from second hand market.
    6. Even I am not a big fan of conspiracies, I am very sure that the price of silver will go up in few years. Not sky rocketing, buy enough to have a decent retirement scheme and a return of my investment.
    7. My wife (typical woman) is not interested about my silver, so I have all my freedom to do what I want with my pirate treasure chest.
    8. Of course, I am still buying every month small quantities of gold, to keep the balance at 50-50% value gold and silver of my stack. I feel more confident to have both metals.
    9. Platinum and palladium are out of my knowledge and interest. And are too similar at appearance with silver, the difference is only in price.
    Kindest regards,
    Stefan.

It is possible, and yes it is a gamble (or call it speculation). Silver bought under VAT will make you turn a profit under the right circumstances. Long term investment horizon is always good, and going to the private market will get you a different buy sell spread.
The general sentiment is that VAT will bite into that profit, especially when buying from and selling to institutional dealers. One can then say that a related investment into gold will have less of that problem.

Taking @Bimetallic's comment, I want to look into the subconsciousness of the silver stacking community...
The UK, Germany, and most of Europe raise a 20+/-% VAT on silver, but not on gold.
So why are we not more aware of VAT? Should the silver section of this largely European forum come with a disclaimer? Should we be on The Gold Forum ?
Why is there even a private silver market in the UK (or Germany - my insight - for that matter)?
Are people stacking silver because of a large American presence in Youtube silver stacking? Are we a herd of sheep in our own way that way?
Or would we think that everyone stacking silver is a Maloney follower and is stacking for the large breakout when the gold:silver ratio shoots up to 15:1?

I began stacking silver in 2010/2011 because seemingly everyone stacked silver. Also the expressed silver community seemed somehow friendlier than the expressed gold community - the lower entry cost had more small everyday stackers with more comparable achievements to me as a Mr. Small investor. In Germany, VAT looked negligible with the lower VAT of 7% on silver (I bought bars at 19% though). Wanting to own a multitude of 'hot' collectibles  (Lunars, Pandas) was more affordable in silver. I decided on a ratio of 1 ounce of gold to one kilogram of silver back then.
Fast forward to 2020/2021 I'm tending more to gold, with an occasional tube of silver thrown in. While that largely has to do with a better financial background on my side, I am feeling that the combined weight of VAT plus premiums on silver is brutal (all silver is on the higher VAT of 19% in Germany these days). And the more I'm thinking, the more I the facts are being hit over head the more silver is becoming a no no for me. I'm still thinking about buying silver collectibles - I'm feeling it's less of a gamble in silver, and that feeling is correct on the total worth aspect, but wrong on the relative return aspect.

So, what are we doing here? Are you stacking silver under VAT? Have your silver stacking habits changed?
