AppleZippoandMetronome got a reaction from silversky in The future of silver, VAT and import charges into the UK now a Deal has been done!?
I've not seen it mentioned in here but in another group I am in it was posted that as part of the new import VAT rules they have abolished the £15 exemption for imported items. Quoting from the following Gov page :
So if anyone was thinking they could get around this by getting someone to undervalue the parcel on the CN22 think again as you'll still get hit. The worst bit about this for me is the handling fee charged by Royal Mail and the couriers which ranges from £8 with RM up to £16. Most you'll pay in VAT on a £15 parcel is £3 but add that handling fee and a lot of cheap items that get imported everyday into the country are suddenly no longer going to be viable to buy.
One thing I'd be interested in is an honest opinion from one of the EU bullion dealers about what difference they think this will make to their business. IMO silver will no longer be viable to buy as an investment in the UK. I am sure people will continue to buy coins and complete series where the emotional investment warrants but in terms of cold hard £££s - its just not going to be worth it. Small orders will definitely not be worth it and if you have the money to make a larger order you might as well buy gold. I suspect my own future purchases will be limited to any deals that come up or I'll bring back my allowance when I am out of the country in a state that doesn't charge tax. Shame, really.

What people thought about the Una actually holds true for other 2oz silver coins issued... Like the James Bond ones. They haven't done very well lately in the auctions, and one could buy a 69 graded one for cheaper than RM initial price offering it seems. 70's are doing a bit better, but the early hype for them seems to be gone.
Una is in a class of its own.

Well a week at most.  I've noted there has been nothing mentioned about VAT harmonisation, so i'm assuming there will be none.  I think we've been waiting for the deal to give new information, i'm coming to realisation its not going to and the current guidance was always going to be in place whatever the outcome.  Goods will be sold "ex"VAT and VAT applied on import. The best course of action will be to gently nudge MPs that removing VAT from investment silver would be a good idea.

In theory the seller will decrease the local VAT (if applied) since the goods will be for export. And then VAT will be paid on import (or charged on behalf of the buyer's country from companies like Ebay or Amazon). The problem is when the original seller does not charge VAT normally but this will have to be added when imported to EU (or vice versa).
Whatever happens the trading will not be as seamless as it used to be, let's see if it closer to the past or something like the US...

I started another thread saying the same but all collectible markets seem to be very hot atm
Maybe a lot of stimulus money has pooled into them, cash saved from mortgage holidays, loan deferrals, less travel/leisure, people bored at home, fear of inflation, a mixture of all? I'm not sure but It seems totally at odds with the current economic climate
My guess would be within a year of public stimulus stopping all the money will get sucked back out for bills/necessities and the markets will start getting flooded and prices will crash
But more stimulus is likely first so 🚀

So you wouldn't compare coins with stamps.

Even though the highest price ever paid for a coin and a stamp is about the same $10m
The stamp collecting market is worth about $10 billion per year, for printed pieces of paper, the coin collecting market is about $18billion, and that includes people collecting for metal intrinsic value as well,

I think they compare quite well, and lessons learnt in one form of collecting should be heeded in the other. Coin Collecting today is where stamps were in the 1970's and 80's. I see the exact same patterns occuring today in coin collecting, that I saw in stamps many decades ago. It's one of the reasons I'm slowly moving out of coins. As the use of coins in general circulation falls, interest from the kids who will be the collectors of the future falls. Slowly the number of collectors diminishes as the old guys die, (have you seen the average age of collectors at coin fairs), and the bottom falls out of the market.
I'll be out before that happens.

Yeah that has been my experience as well. No calls, no junk mail and no credit check. But other members reported a different experience in the past so thought it was worth warning about. Still for fractional pieces that usually sell for so much more money one can't complain. I'll buy all of these that I can

These are nice and worth getting at the price. There are also the 1g Brexit ones for £49 which gives a chance to get 6 of these if they are still available. That is what I did a couple months back. Only point I would say when ordering is to be very aware that CPM basically use these to fish. They dangle the cheap item in the hopes of upselling for something MUCH more expensive and not at all worth the price. When ordering ensure you do not subscribe to any mailing lists either physical or email. They also might do a credit check.
So its a good deal but be careful with the upselling, advertisements - sometimes physical highly branded mail sent to you - and credit check.

I've purchased a number of items from them. All arrived in decent time. I've seen no searches on my credit report. I've had no junk mail or phone calls. If ordering be careful and ensure you opt out of contact options. I can't guarantee they won't do a search on your credit file or contact you - this is just my experience.

As an aside I absolutely hate this company as well as Westminster Collection who I'm guessing are related since they look the same. They do occasionally have very good deals on random items they obviously put out there to try and hook people in to buying some of their more rip off, outrageously priced items. Opt out of the contact options and stick with the few good value items and I don't think you can lose.

The only thing I could guess - and this isn't going to be at all helpful and might have already been considered - is that it is a trial coin made for a different market. With whats been posted already it seems clear that its not UK coinage so with the Royal Mint minting coins for many other countries I can only imagine its a trial for a different country (well that or its a counterfeit as was originally suggested). One could look at the coins from the various countries the Royal Mint mints coins for and see if something is a visual match but that could be tedious. Fingers crossed Royal Mint are quick to get back to you and solve the mystery!
