Is anyone else confused as to why the Mint are calling these a "Memorial Sovereign"? There is nothing about QEII on them.

Sorry Paul to throw spanner in your works, (not too much though), I also did some digging by looking back and and I think the 5 set coin at first rrp was £4795 not £4920. Percent increase to price for new 5 set is 16.68%, not the 13.71% in my spreadsheet. So it looks like the 4 coin set has less of a increase than the 5 coin set. Thanks for your number crunching

HP may be popular, but not all Harry Potter fans collect coins. And like any mega franchise, Harry Potter has a terrible load of merchandise already which hardcore fans have been collecting for years.
The overlap between HP fans and coin collectors may be smaller than we think.

kimchi reacted to Arganto in Special Delivery - is it fit for purpose?
Something that doesn't seem to have been yelled about in this thread yet, apologies if I've got the wrong end of this particular stick, is the fact that the Royal Mail will only pay out compensation for the "purchase price" not the "sale price". Excuse me? That is not acceptable in the slightest. If you keep inventory for an amount of time and the cash value of that stock goes up you should expect any insurance claim to cover the value of the sales transaction. If I bought a Ford Capri in 1994 it may have cost me £500, that same car in comparable condition would be £thousands today. If the car is stolen/written off/damaged in transit I would be receiving the market value of the vehicle at the date of claim. The same goes for sales, a Ming dynasty vase that was lost/stolen in transit would garner the insurance value relevant to the sale amount/contemporary value. Why are Royal Mail trying to alter reality for personal sales of precious metals? I can't see this argument standing up in court, but then even approaching the idea of legal action is costly for the applicant so we'll probably never find out 🤷🏼♂️

The series was very collectable but the latest 10 years have all been the same. I actually like the latest manifestation with all the wavy lines and security features but that's not much use if they're milky and gouged.
The problem you have now is that some of the older years going back to 1998 (?1997) are getting quite expensive to source.

Bullion Brits are generally not collectable (there are a few exceptions, like the Orientals or privy marks, but not the 'bog standard' yearly releases). That said, of course I cannot defend the 'quality' you've received - that is dreadful On pure bullion like this many dealers would not take a return/exchange but it seems like you found one who do. I can only encourage you to keep returning until you're happy (or just cancel and ask for a refund).
Don't let this put you off silver entirely though, and yes gold is a good bet!
Agreed with Perth, they set the standard! But I have had a milky Kook or two, they're not perfect either. Not sure about the recent dragon bars but I've had horrible ones from 2018 that had machine damage and marks, and ones that tarnished terribly - since then I've only ever seen them as equivalent to the Perth Kangaroos (again cheapest bullion quality, even if they do charge a premium for the Dragons).
I'd only do that on your own coins, not ones you think you might sell on in the future. If you sell them and don't disclose that rough cleaning it might very well come back to bite you in terms of reputation! Hope that helps

There is no need to be such a pedant when the meaning is clear to all, imvho you knew what was meant.
Then why does Lawrence pick up on minor mistakes by others when he makes terrible ones himself?
Why be so pedantic at all?
It just reflects badly on the forum imvho.

we should be careful to say "proof half sovereign", which is perfectly clear.

Yes, the first order of 50 boxes (I think) sold out very quickly so a second draw was produced. I bought in the second draw. I did not hear about anyone finding one. Maybe they chose to remain quiet or perhaps allegedly it was all a massive money spinner to allegedly get rid of the Beatrix Potter coins that were allegedly starting to milk? #seeyouincourtlawrence

I signed up for the mystery box last year. Received a load of Chards goodies - branded coffee travel cup etc. everything you can think of except the magic sovereign that went to someone else. Even chocolate coins, but they were not branded. I often wondered whether Chards could help us get around the silver VAT issue by selling us chocolate coins for 19 GBP each and throwing in a free silver coin per chocolate coin bought.

It is rather similar to the common saying "half a crown", meaning a halfcrown.
Both convey their meanings quite accurately, and without much risk of accidental misunderstanding.
Of course, in both cases, someone being pedantic, or taking it literally, could imagine a crown or sovereign split into two halves. This is something which I might do for fun, or some people with autism or Asperger's might interpret literally for a different reason.
In the case of the 1963 Musical "Half a Sixpence", a literal interpretation was intended and understood.

Basically, the same as the royal coat of arms used on the platinum jubilee sovereign but the crown is different on Charlie boy's version of it, hardly any noticeable difference really.
Whoever is designing the new coin will interpret it differently and hopefully we won't get two sovereigns in a row that look near enough identical.

Indeed, they should leave the actual prices of past coins, but if they do it people will realise the 15-20% increase from last year.

I thought they would go to £675 myself (as crazy as even that sounds to me, as I roll it around my bonce) but wouldn't be surprised at £695 at all.
Good news for all the recent most desirable QEIIs of course (though I'd argue that is most of them).
Shocking how they can (and do) change 'past, sold out' prices to make it look like new releases are no different.
