Thought you might like a comparison photo of Half-crowns in .925 and 500 silver with the last Cupro-nickel/zero silver. Nickel does the job but is the worst of the alloys. It bleaches out the copper big time to make it look silver, but in fact has been known to be slightly carcinogenic, with some people allergic to this metal, causing dermatitis. The EU and USA I believe are reluctant to use it in coinage? No problem with gold though😃!!

Thank you, @Dakaras, good point. I am supposing the same. The pressure is equally on both sides for sure. So, you have already the correct explanation. On the obverse is less deep.

I feel flattered to see that I was nominated to execute this delicate experiment. I promise you I won't disappoint you. I have already ordered two threepence coins from different alloys. After they arrive, I will communicate the pseudo-scientific results.😊

Dakaras reacted to sixgun in Hallmark help please
This mark is Sn 95% - the Sn is the chemical symbol for tin - it is a mark seen on pewter pieces. Here is a better example
Etain at the bottom of the marks is ÉTAIN - this is French for tin.
GT are the initials of Giorgio Tabellini, founder of La Bottega del Peltro in 1970 - so it is a  La Bottega del Peltro piece - this is Italian for The Pewter Shop,
     - this is another pewter 'hallmark'
Not sure what the last mark is but i presume is just another 'decorative' hallmark.

I’m wondering if anyone has any information of the Spanish silver and gold cobs of 16th - 18th century.
I noticed a listing on eBay of all places as a suggested product of interest for me and I’ve been researching them a bit more. I have heard of and seen them before and I’m not sure I would buy one from eBay but they seem relatively inexpensive. They were made crudely, usually in the America’s, modern day South America and most seem be stamped with a cross.
I’d like to own a piece or two, purely for historical appreciation and because, it’s silver!!
They look like what we think of as ‘pirate treasure’ and I suppose that’s not far from the truth given pirates were robbing European ships during this time.
Anyway does anyone have any advice where to buy them and also how to tell if they are genuine.
Even better if anyone has some to show on this thread.

As with all numismatics - the condition will determine the cost. Most of mine are VF which can be picked up for a reasonable price, once you start looking at EF or UNC then it becomes serious. Veiled head Victorian pennies and Edward VII bronze pennies would be a good starting point for a collection - which can be found for around £6-£10 in VF... Until you start looking at the varieties..
I don't actively seek out copper coins any more, just enjoy what i've got. Never say never though !

Have done a lot of metal detecting over a number of years 😀
You can discriminate iron to some degree but you cant discriminate any non ferrous metals because you will reject signals that you would want to dig .
For example if you discriminate and reject can ring pulls you will miss hammered silver coins as they come up with the same numbers 😀
It takes at least five years of long detecting hours to find a gold hammered coin and digging thousands of trash targets 😂
Silver hammered coins come up a bit more often but only if your looking in the right places and even then its long hours and hundreds of trash targets to dig
