As the post above says,  it’s difficult to say for sure. The 1928 M mint sovereign does exist and it’s one of the rare dates and branch mints of George V.
You would really need to know if the weight was correct and the size. Many of the later George V branch mint sovereigns were weakly stuck, I have one or two myself.
@Allgoldcoins is selling the 1928 M mint sovereign on their website here:

I wouldn't see anything suspicious here, but from pictures it's hard to tell for sure.
Maybe your relative should see a jeweller or coin dealer for a physical analysis.

It's a very nice coin and from the photos it looks like a proof-like example which are known in this issue.
Judging the wear on the high points and comparing to graded examples I would guess MS64 or 64+ but that is dependant on the finish of the fields which can be difficult to judge from photos. The graders can be fussy with this aspect so this would be my only caveat.
I would say it is worth the money and I would probably buy it if I were looking for one myself😉

At face value on those photos, the coin looks really nice.  €4,000 strikes me as a high price though - although looking at the three most recent sales of UNC (or near so) examples at London Coins, perhaps the price is OK.
    https://www.londoncoins.co.uk/?page=Pastresults&searchterm=Two+Pounds+1823&searchtype=1

There aren't many of these available for sale in that condition at any one time, so perhaps it's worth the money to a collector.  So go for it if you are happy that it's genuine and you appreciate the history and beauty of this coin.

I don’t know much about grades etc. but all I will say is that coins can look completely different under different lighting and angles.
If you can’t see the coin in person, ask the seller to send you more high resolution images and also a video of them moving the coin around at different angles.
You may be surprised at what the coin looks like compared to these two pictures.

Thank you all for your feedback! Very informative.
@GoldDiggerDave When you say "weak strike" are you referring to the height of the relief in comparison to the fields, thus the overall detail?

    Hello forum!
I was recently offered a 1911 £5 Sovereign from a private seller, who also sent me the photos.
I am not an expert, but with my limited experience I think it is real, although a bit worn on the highest points.
Can you please offer your knowledge on this piece?

    Hello forum!
I stumbled upon a George IV £2 coin dated 1823 on a website and I found it to be quite superb!😊
However, I am not an expert on numismatics and I would like an opinion on its (approximate) grade, so as to know whether or not it is worth its price tag (~€4,000).
Based on the photos alone I would say it is between the range of MS60 to MS63, although I could be terribly wrong!😵
I am uploading the photos so that you can grade for yourselves!

With a coin like this in this grade it is harder to price. It is still premium, but you'd need to find a buyer looking for this type and who would be forgiving of the fact it is a little damaged.
I would expect some buyers to pay in the region of £200 to £300, but there is not as well defined a market here as there is for graded, uncirculated examples which frequent auctions. Nobody would grade this piece and few would think about seeking out a reputable auction house to sell it through.
    There is still value here!
    Cheers!

@CollectForFun Well yeah. I saw this piece on a local trading list and just wanted to post it here on the forum for the members to judge if it is genuine or not. If it isn't, well then the people that may be interested in buying such a piece, can learn more about the counterfeits that are circulating.
@DuncanWylieWilson Thank you very much for your info! I am not interested in buying that piece, although do you think you could put a rough estimate its value?

thanasis reacted to DuncanWylieWilson in Switzerland 5 Francs 1850
First off, thank you for the tag, @Tn21
Regarding this Swiss 5 Francs 1850-A, this is one of only two dates in this series minted in Paris (A), the rest of which were minted in Bern (B) and Brussels (B.) respectively.
If this coin were fully uncirculated then I would expect it to fetch £1,350 to £1,750 in the correct auction with the relevant audience.
The coin you have presented here is clearly not uncirculated, and while it has some rather unfortunate wear and rim damage it is still a premium piece which would be of interest to collectors. Indeed, the condition of this piece would make it accessible to somebody looking for this type but whose budget won't stretch to the procurement of a higher grade example.
I won't attest to its authenticity off of the photos provided, but it should be fine. There are plenty of ways to test these out in a non-invasive, non-damaging way.
Nice piece and thank you for sharing!
    All the best,
    Duncan. 🌟

    Hello forum!
I saw this listing of a private seller on one of the local trading websites.
I wanted to upload it for educational purposes, as many listings from private sellers need to be examined very closely.
So, I am asking any members with experience to tell us their opinion on this coin. 😉

I've seen many, (won't say "raw") circulation sovereigns where they are over graded the moustache is always the goto point along with the hairline above the temple, the ear is also a good indiction of the wear.  It does get more difficult IMO when they are in the mid  VF,gVF,aEF,EF range, and it's not all about wear theres numerous other factors.

The end of the moustache in the comparison for example is telling in my opinion; one is crisp and clear and the other looks likes a very weak strike/copy or has been polished/rubbed (almost like it’s been heavily handled or circulated if real). Seems to be consistent all over the coin and if I had the option to buy it I wouldn’t off these pictures. Even if this ended up being authentic something isn’t right with the weakness of the detail

That comparison clinches it, 99% fake. The 1% doubt is due to the two photos being a slightly different angles.
It is supposed to be a proof but that doesn't look possible. Again slight doubt due to photographic artefacts.

I'm no expert or claim to be, the reverse just looks weak, yes low relief, low detail for a proof coin its certainly had a hard life, but theres only so much you can do with photos only.  If you are intending to buy there's nothing wrong at all asking for more photos and do some research into the coin.  The likely price of the coin. (is it too good to be true?) Look at some comparisons online, the left is a 1911 £5 at the London Coin auction yours on the right.
First time I saw this the dragon looked particularly weak and looks off.   Only my opinion and other will have their own opinions.  Take your time have fun and enjoy the hobby.
    Hope this helps.

My first impression was fake, it doesn't look "right".
However, I have never seen one of these and comparing the photos with an original, it doesn't look too bad.
If I had to put my money somewhere, I wouldn't touch it.

The edge damage on the obverse is surprising for a proof only issue, and the apparent weak striking on the reverse is not exactly auspicious.
You might try asking the seller for provenance, such as who he acquired it from. He probably won't want to tell you unless it is genuine.
I certainly would not buy it on the strength of those photos.
