1928-M Sovereign

Hello forum!

A family relative of mine has a 1928-M sovereign and is wondering whether or not it's genuine.

He sent me some photos for me to look at the details, although I really can't tell from these ☹️

The only example that I found which resembles the sovereign exactly, was on this page from a bullion dealer:

https://www.bullionbypost.eu/gold-sovereign-specific-year/george-v-1911-1932/1928-gold-sovereign-king-george-v-m/

So, if the sovereign is fake, that means that a bullion dealer advertises one with a photo of a fake...😮

I am uploading the photos to see for yourselves.

As the post above says,  it’s difficult to say for sure. The 1928 M mint sovereign does exist and it’s one of the rare dates and branch mints of George V.

You would really need to know if the weight was correct and the size. Many of the later George V branch mint sovereigns were weakly stuck, I have one or two myself.

@Allgoldcoins is selling the 1928 M mint sovereign on their website here:

Not sure, but in the photos both coins seem to have a "pimple" between the horse's front legs in the exact same location, which could indicate a concern. There may be other similarities as well, a bit hard to see.

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary. - H.L. Mencken

Well done spotting the raised pimples, which are a big clue. A closer look shows quite a few of them on both sides.

Is it fake, as in, not .917 gold, or is it actual gold, just not an authentic sov?

@CollectForFun Fake as in lower gold content, therefore not an authentic sov...

A fake is still a fake even if it has the correct gold content.

But of course, if the gold content is wrong, then it makes for an easy identification.
