Chorlton reacted to Bratnia in Investment Advice Needed Please
If you save just into gold for retirement you could end up very disappointed. 1980 to 1999 for instance and generally the price of gold just repeatedly declined. 50/50 stock/gold however and stocks did well, where yearly rebalancing back to 50/50 values typically had you adding more ounces of gold, ending up with something like six to ten times more gold without any further capital having been added, just from rebalancing. Stocks and gold combine well, gold alone is pretty high risk.

Chorlton got a reaction from Zhorro in Is seeking 70 the slow decline & death of coin collecting ??? what's your thoughts
The grading is useful as confirming both what the coin is and its condition. This is helpful for people as not many have the knowledge to confirm what any coin is and also its grade. This does not mean ungraded coins have any issue and having found ungraded coins at good prices in excellent condition myself. Where I would fall down is in ancient coins which interest me but I have very little knowledge or experience in this area so grading could be very useful. For coins like Sovereigns not so much.

Chorlton reacted to dicker in Sales Topics - Volumes
Appreciate we are not supposed to talk about the forum on the forum, but in case people have not seen the stats from @ChrisSilver this is worth looking at.
As per one of my posts earlier this year, the trade sections are absolutely packed with volume / flow for Gold. This is great - there were times when I wanted a Sov or two and there were none available for a week - now there is constant flow and a great deal of variety.
New members take note, TSF offers an awesome platform to buy and sell, and the cost of membership is well well worth it for the trade section alone.

Hi there, nice set you have inherited. Certainly worth a large premium over spot- if in excellent condition, a raw set I would say £4k on a bad day.

Chorlton reacted to dicker in Gold Monitoring Thread £ GBP only
When it says the government will nationalise this means the Swiss tax payer. They will be spitting feathers 🙂
So if this is done the market will be sniffing out the next weakest institution…
The US won’t nationalise / bail out smaller banks so it’s bail in time (rinse the bond holders)…
All good for Gold in GBP I suspect. Hang onto your hats folks!

Chorlton reacted to dicker in Range of Gold for Sale on TSF
I saw @ChrisSilver’s post on the 830 trade topics.
I have to say that I have not seen as much variety on TSF before with real volume and diversity - so as to appeal to a very wide group of people
A while back, I struggled to find enough Sovs, Brits, Nuggets etc to buy on TSF at any point. Now there is a very very good supply and flow of coins which I want to buy at all times.
Keep it up everyone
Best

Chorlton reacted to arphethean in 1925 sovereigns in MS66
1925 London mint in an exceptional MS66 grade.
2 available
Mintage of 3.5 million, or if it's the restrike, only 866,000! Rather difficult to tell!
£530 for one posted SD, £1050 for both.

Chorlton reacted to GoldDiggerDave in Grade or Not
It depends on what you are trying to achieve.
it’s it sentimental reasons, part of a graded series’s of coins, you hoping it will grade very high and make loads of money or just want to see how the process works? Some questions you may want to ask yourself as there’s no one answer fits all.
There is multiple edge knocks, the obverse is worn so it will not grade high imo. It’s a common year large head variety.

Chorlton reacted to EdwardTeach in Gold Monitoring Thread £ GBP only
Ideally, it would go straight up to £2,000 and stay there for the next month. Then once I've saved up enough money to buy another Sovereign it will drop down to £500 for 5 minutes while I place my order then immediately jump straight back up to £2,000 again after I've clicked on the buy button and my order has been processed.

An eighth of a sovereign may appear if the value keeps rising. Best to keep that safely in a decent sized capsule or one sneeze and its gone 😲

Chorlton got a reaction from Silverlocks in Spink launch grading system!
In part there is always an element of doubt when the grader is also the seller, which is also in part determined by their reputation and history in the first place.

Chorlton reacted to Bruce06 in £755 for a 1957 Sovereign anyone?
RM old coinages are all very expensive comparing with outside n auction house, and they even do not have a picture to show the exact coin they are selling with such premium. I remember I asked for a photo by email years ago, and they just reply sorry nothing is able to provide, in case you are not satisfied you can simply return it...customer service nowadays, ha.

Chorlton reacted to AndrewSL76 in Is Graded gold worth acquiring?
Late to the discussion, but here is my view.
I collect graded coins (mainly PCGS) and I stack bullion. My attitude towards buying is totally different when ‘collecting’ or ‘stacking’. My passion is half sovereigns and I would happily pay premiums for a rare, high graded half sovereign, but for anything that is bullion, I would not pay above the odds on spot price.
In terms of collecting - there are the different population reports from the main grading companies and so you can see what is common or not. It makes me smile when you see people listing an MS65 coin and they say ‘super high grade’ but then you look at the population report and there are 87 of them in 65 and 32 in 66 and then only four in 67. The money being asked for the 65 is what you would pay for the 67. The key here is to do your research, understand the population reports, the scarcity and how rare the coin is before buying. If someone tells you a graded coin is ‘rare’ then do not be afraid to question it and check the population reports. For me, building a collection, I want to have top and high grade coins, but I am equally happy to buy an MS63 until a more reasonable priced MS64/65 coin comes along (which it inevitably will if the population reports high numbers).
For stacking, I am lucky to have easy access to Hatton Garden and you can always find going coins at spot price or thereabouts. There are of course times when the dealers are either not selling (because they bought at a higher price) or they are selling high about spot (for the same reason) but generally you can always get something there. The other day I bought a bullion 2012 QEII Sov for spot. It’s in fairly good condition but still, spot price regardless of the design. Had the dealer wanted even a small premium I would have passed.
And, yes, I agree with everyone above. If someone calls you to tell you about an investment opportunity ask yourself this: if the investment opportunity is so good, why are they having to flog it over the phone to me?

Chorlton reacted to James32 in 2022 Sovereign design revealed?
Here's what I've learned.
Buy because you love the design, nothing else.
In the hope you get a good coin, be happy with that.
If an opportunity arises that you can make a few pound the next day or a year later, great.
But go into it viewing it like this, I really like the design and I'm happy for it to only be worth melt "worst case scenario "
I do expect them to do well, but from experience I also expect whatever idea you have to cover yourself, thousands of others have the same idea. Market gets diluted and value drops, happened with every release so far and this will be no different.
Buy proofs because you want them is the message I'm trying to get across. Hold for 5 years and you should do well.
