Omp or no?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Need you opinions, please.

I recently picked up the 1oz Una and the Lion and 1oz Three Graces bars.

I'm not at all keen on the plastic packaging the Una and the Lion bar comes in so was thinking of putting it in a capsule.

Should I do it or not?

But then my OCD kicks in and says I want them to both be the same so should I put the Three Graces in a capsule as well or would that ruin the potential future value?

🤔

The Three Graces bar looks beautiful - I would certainly leave it as it is.  If you don't like the plastic packaging on the Una one, then put it in a capsule - but this is not financial advice!

I thought plastic could damage coins?  Is modern plastic still a danger to coins?

Sorry to sound a bit thick, but WTF is Omp?

Not at all... I had the same question when I first hear the abbreviation... I should have been more clear 😬

Short for "original mint (or manufacturers) packaging" to the best of my limited knowledge

I'm thinking along those lines too... I thought it would be better in a capsule as I'd heard the plastic could ruin it 🤷🏽‍♂️

The Una is definitely going in a capsule

I might have guessed if it had said OMP, or better still O.M.P.

Just after I posted my comment, I checked Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OMP

OMP may refer to:

OMP Racing, an Italian manufacturer of racing car equipment
Ontario Model Parliament, a model parliament for high school students in Canada
OpenMP, an application programming interface
Oregon Mozart Players, a professional chamber orchestra based in Eugene, Oregon
Online marketing platform, an integrated set of web-based marketing tools
Ośrodek Myśli Politycznej, Polish think tank
Orthogonal matching pursuit
Biology
Orotidine monophosphate, a nucleotide
Osteoblast milk protein, a milk additive
Outer membrane proteins, found in the outer membranes of gram-negative bacteria
Oral Micronized Progesterone

But none of them sounded relevant.

I just noticed you are in Cyprus, so I tried Google Translate for a Greek or Turkish translation, but nada!

I did think about the similarity to O.M.G., perhaps Oh My Papa (as in father / God), which them mentally morphed into Oh Mein Papa, (cue trumpets).

So, you're going to take it out of the plastic packaging, and put it in a plastic capsule instead?

Because you have heard plastic could ruin it?

When I read OMP, I thought about little purple men from Wonka's Chocolate Factory, but they're different...

Ah, the Oompa Loompas.

I just checked my spelling of them, and Google Search says:

People also ask
What does it mean to call someone Oompa Loompa?
Are Oompa-Loompas real?
What race are Oompa-Loompas?
Are the Oompa-Loompas African?

I have a further question:

Is it me?

OK, wow, now I'm embarrassed.

I've made a fool of myself in front of a legend! 🤦🏽‍♂️

Note to future self... Be clearer in your title/enquiry... And check who is commenting on your post before you hastily reply like an idiot 👍🏽

I was under the impression (may have misunderstood videos on YouTube) that soft plastic like the one the bar came in could leave residue on the bar or something like that, and that capsules are a better way to protect them long term.

As a novice, I figured I'd ask those more experienced, such as yourself, if I am correct in my thinking before doing so.

No need to feel embarrassed.

I do like to have a little innocent fun, and it does often have some educational content.

P.V.C. is known to be unstable, and does cause some corrosion and toning on coins.

PolyVinyl Chloride is the world's third-most widely produced synthetic polymer of plastic. About 40 million tons of PVC are produced each year. PVC comes in two basic forms: rigid and flexible. The rigid form of PVC is used in construction for pipe and in profile applications such as doors and windows.

There are many different types of plastic. Hopefully most of the plastics used for coin capsules are inert and stable.

I think the original RM packaging should be OK.

🙂

Who knows!  I hear lots of people talking about their strike your own coins toning in the Royal Mint's SYO packaging within only a few years.

Here's an example plucked off of eBay (a 2019 50p)

In answer to the OP's OQ* - I would leave the Three Graces bar in its OMP and put the Una bar into a plastic capsule.

* Original Poster's Original Question 😛

So, next question:

As far as the Royal Mint are concerned, what does Q.C. stand for?

I like to buy the pre-dip dip

Yup, he's had a good old feel at it with his manky hands, said 'that'll do' and chucked it in the old shoe box that goes to the specialists in the secure packaging department.

Being the Royal Mint, it's probably Quality Craftsmanship let down by Quite Careless, Quirky Control followed by a Quick Change of direction with its Questionable Childlike designed products.

Whatever happened to the bullion Lunar Series I hear you ask ! 🙄

Don't worry OP - you're not alone in this. The RM are ruddy clueless to issue the three graces bars in packaging following the Una bars being released in 'cling film'. I fully expect the next release to be housed in something completely different again.

(unless, of course, they have a cunning plan to release matching empty packaging at some point in the future - for a small fee) ?

Personally i have re-housed my Una bars in hard capsules and am girding my loins to do the same with the three graces. Any product in the original packaging will sell quicker than loose product - whether the packaging will carry a premium is yet to be determined but, historically, it does make a difference in re-sale prices.

I bought a bar for my own pleasure which i will re-house. Anyone who has bought bars to eventually re-sell would be advised to leave them as is.
