I always associate grey or black BMWs with low intelligence, and thought I was wrong/harsh to do so. Obviously not.

Don't know about BMW, but if you're buying a new Audi, standard colours are black or white, anything else is a £2K add-on, metallic is £3k and the super matt finish metallic is £4k.

That's 2oz of gold just for the paint job!

I used to have a metallic black BMW many moons ago. So far back is was when Audi drivers were the a$$holes, before BMW drivers were the a$$holes, before the Audi drivers took it back... and that was all before 2010 :D

What! You mean people actually pay extra for those Wheelie-Bin Grey paint jobs? :o

Anything for anonymity. Must conform. No distinguishing colour, no unusual choice of make/model, blacked out windows...
then they buy a registration number with their name on!

What is going on?

There are some serious margin differentials going on here.

Let's compare it to this:

Perhaps covering themselves if gold dips back as quick as it rose up? Protecting the margins... Maybe as simple as supply and demand? I'd guess that if they've plenty of stock they don't need to be as competitive with their bid

If you needed to buy stock in more aggressively to meet demand, like times when they were paying over spot for some items, they'd increase their bid?

If price stabilised for a period of time I think margins could settle down but keen to hear other ideas
