There's no way PCGS slabbed that coin. It's either a fake holder, or it's been cracked open and resealed.

dicker reacted to TeaTime in Another Royal Mint survey - About Royalty themed coins and ranges
The RM has a history of producing excruciatingly bad (and often lazily designed) modern royal themed coins that appeal to maybe 0.001% of the population.. Yet they still keep making them.
Nearly naked beautiful women* is what we want. Get to it RM.
* substitute your preference if you must.

I think it may be a declining hobby. Most people under 40 don’t carry or use cash and have lost the connection to it. All big mints are struggling to attract buyers. That’s why we have so many pop culture coin releases now - hey I like music and movies but I don’t need them celebrated on coins. What’s next, a special Vegemite 50p?

dicker reacted to westminstrel in Another Royal Mint survey - About Royalty themed coins and ranges
Some of the proposed celebrations, birthdays, anniversaries, jubilees, remembrances etc. about current Royal Family members and past royal personalities that they asked about my interest in really scared the heck out of me.
The c**p they can churn out if they really want to knows no bounds.

They are running out of ideas, there’s only so many spurious anniversaries, they can pump commemorative coins.
Biggest issue? Most people I come in contact with withIn the coin world know next to nothing about coins and are not remotely interested in them.
This is a lot of people who work at the RM they have x product to sell today that’s as far as their interest goes.

I’m not an expert on slabs but it may be that the slab is genuine and has been opened - and a counterfeit coin substituted.
Counterfeit PCGS graded slabbed coins are readily available and the slabs themselves are pretty convincing. See below for an example on a Chinese knockoff site
Beware everyone!

Oh dear, that is so bad, there is no chance it ever went through the PCGS, must be a fake slab.

The font is completely wrong. The fields are not flat at all. Coin looks cast rather than milled.
Here's my 1957 which NGC graded 64.

Obverse is hideous
The reverse is all kind of wrong, it looks like a photo thats been cropped at 95% of real size.
Tail is very poor. B.P?
Overall surface is not right
Too many alarm bells with this coin.

dicker reacted to entsor in I have acquired an 1890 Carson City Morgan Dollar that I think is a replica/fake. Any thoughts are welcome.
Fortunately no money lost, this came as part of collection that I paid very little for. I wouldn’t go for grading on this coin, however getting it Sigma tested would be nice to know the composition.

I have looked at the pics again on a high res screen rather than my iPhone.
I am pretty sure it is a counterfeit.

Doubles generally seemed to be somewhat unloved. Will try and pick up a few this year if and when funds allow!

dicker reacted to cjbcomm in Bugger! Missed out on a 1989 Double Sov
Guess that explains the premium. Couldn't see myself spending £2k on a modern sov with such high mintage but the double about makes sense.... still a decent premium but a lovely coin in that size

I think lots are from sets that are broken up (sadly). Plenty of collectors only want the Sov.
