    Wow, fantastic pictures!!!

I think the somewhat divisive  'one leg' 2018 is a bold design personally, and one of the bravest of the 'classic' format (such as that 2014) before the redesign (lovely coins but not in the same league for me).

I also believe the 2018 is a 'first' for two reasons (always happy to be corrected!). Firstly that the design of the Kook crosses the border. Secondly that one privy issue at least completely removes a KEY aspect of the design (the moon). From memory I think it was the year of the dog privy (?).  I am not sure as my coins have been in storage for years, but whatever it is it's notable imho :)

Thor coin is the 2nd release from the Marvel Classics series, with Captain America been the 1st

(probably you are thinking of other Marvel  coin series)

I have most of the first series but it's in storage, was that Niue as well?

If so, isn't this kind of a second series (?)

  3. Hi @bean182 :)

    I believe I have TSF 1oz bars 006 from 2020 and 2021.

The CoAs are here, along with the bars, but sorry the light is not good enough for my old eyes to double check the actual stamping on the bar as the sun sets!

I probably have 2019 and (less likely) 2018, but I haven't been able to get to where my bars for those years are stored yet to check.

What happened I think is that I was lucky enough to pick up numbers 5 and 6 (and some others) a year or two after release. I chose to sell 5 and some other numbers in 2020 because I needed the money at the time. Last year I wasn't able to take up my bars, so I guess you were lucky enough to get the very first number available, great luck!

I should say I am not particularly inclined to sell these years at the moment, but you are welcome to PM me if you'd like to discuss things :)

Until 2017, all the SotDs were BU strikes.

The 2017 200th Anniversary of the Sovereign SotD was also classed as a BU, but it was quite obviously a proof strike. They just couldn’t call it that because customers would be mad that another, more limited proof 2017 Sovereign got released.

The last time I looked the Mint said that BUs are struck 3 times, and Proofs are struck up to 6 (and of course you would expect more attention to the dies, and to QC although we know that can be hit and miss to say the least). Whether that's actually the case or not I've no idea. With the 2017 I agree it's indistinguishable in quality (and the 'error' CoA didn't help! 🤣 ). So I think we can put that down to the Mint making them just like a Proof - the error Cert certainly suggests some serious internal confusion!

My 2018 Sapphire Coronations are a bit different, definitely almost proof, but a lighter strike. Slightly more subtle (less contrast) than a full proof, very elegant in a way, and that's why it's one of the favourite modern Sovs I have (most eye appeal for me) :)

I only have the 2017 and 2018 so can't really comment on any others, except that I just personally wasn't attracted to the Mattes.

I’m wondering how they ended up with less than the max mintage because all these SotDs were sold out, meaning they were definitely struck.

As you suggest, does the RM scrap (melt down?) returns rather than resell them at current market prices?

The 2018 Sapphire Coronation (Marsh and others - I assume they use those figures - say 323, which is a very definite number, I'd love to know where that figure comes from @GoldDiggerDave!) was a strange case. It 'sold out' fairly quickly at the Mint, but not by the crazy standards we've seen since 2019. It wasn't that hard to get them from certain dealers that are not so commonly mentioned on here. The problem was the caps, all came off in transit, in some cases causing damage. Because there was no problem getting replacements from the aforementioned sources I returned a handful before I got ones I was 100% happy with, but in hindsight I was being super picky because of the capsule problem, and wish I'd kept one or two more, as I now believe this one is a 'name your price' coin (or soon will be, within reason of course - personally I'm holding long-term).

No idea what happened to all the returns, or why the stated mintage is so low. Maybe the company I dealt with sold them at discount to their employees (they were pretty clueless) and the actual mintage is higher than Marsh thinks (?).

Thanks buddy. Basically my wife died in January. Her birth year…1970. No worries, thanks for the sensible response and not laughing.

Oh no, so sorry and very sad to hear this buddy, wishing you all power, strength and very best wishes to you and your son at this most difficult of times ❤️

We will try to find you something special 🙏

Royal Mint had the audacity to increase the prices on unsold stock.

It's when they go back and change the list price for coins that were instant (or pretty much) sell-outs when the next coin in the series is released that is most despicable imo.

silver sorry, but gold is not a bad call as well.

I don't see anything really myself, I think that ship has sailed with the price of gold and the VAT on silver.

I'd probably go for either TBs 1/4 gold if the premium is not too high, otherwise stick to deals on here (there have been some crazy cheap Proof Sov deals lately - but you can't pick and choose your dates to build a collection, you get what's on offer at the best price).

If I was looking now I'd go for simple humble silver Brits (maybe spot an alternative if something like the myths and legends came out at a low premium, but with some sort of quality!) and gold bullion Sovs (looking preferably to get older QEII years at low premium, as they are a good bet right now, and/or new issues at release).

Best to use distilled water if you can :)

Very good! Was that one of those ultrasonic baths?

I really just want to like when the bullion Sov is available to buy. Not sure if that’s been shared and I’ve missed it or if that’s just not headline enough vs proof coins

Quite possibly. I’ve got lots already so I guess it’s just boredom and wanting to pick up the next one. I also see it as more than just a G&D. I’m actually a bit excited about picking up a CIII G&D. Maybe I’ll just keep picking up back catalogue QV/QEII Sovs in that case 👍🏼

I think they're all worth snapping up (as you can) at the lowest premium possible, in release order. I agree though that the first CIII G&D after the jubilee and memorial may be an opportunity, as some folks will be 'all Sovereigned out' when the time comes. Only time will tell :)
