The mint are going to kick to arse out of this so I would be wary also, god knows what else they are going to release. I think they still need to work hard on getting the balance right between supplying what the market wants, making a profit and having excellent QC (which they have not)
All that said , I would love to see a special, once only, platinum sovereign this year, perhaps with a limit of 700?

You had me going there. I remember @mr-deadhad a tri metallic coin in the past, don’t think it was as large as your imagination though.

Did you see the 12oz tri-metallic special edition VIP only issue? The inner section is platinum (4oz), middle section is gold (4oz) and outer section is silver (4oz). The reverse is the same design as with the new Crown and the obverse is a special new portrait of the Queen. The mintage is 0 as I made this up. Sorry.

Received and all look perfect to my untrained eyes
RM to their credit have done excellent with their solution, listened thanks to our collective moans here
foam spacers in every hole to prevent capsules dislodging
Thick velvet protector strip to protect wood
and thick rectangular foam to sandwich all together to prevent any movement  in transit
So anyone awaiting their set still should hopefully have their mind at ease
    The £5 is a beauty

I agree. They don't have the capacity for fulfilling past releases it seems. It seems the sales targets are taking a lead over their operational capacity.
I assume it can't continue indefinitely that way, you can already see the gothic portrait, some people will likely be waiting until May or June.
It's these sell out releases in particular, they know they could take all of the money and ship within a week or so. They still have 1800 due from me, when they eventually ship the gothic.
I would have imagined money in the till should be king, and perhaps they should arrange their capacity around that, and perhaps lessen the various versions of other stuff.

    Hi JJH
Normally the dies are sandblasted to give the coin the matte granular finish. This technique was adopted by a number of mints around the start of the 1900's.  In 1902 Matte proof currency set was made in the UK, and also around this time 1908 the US mints experimented with the same technique of striking the coins with an un polished die and then sandblasting the the die between strikes. The appearance of the coin can be altered by the fineness of the sand grains used.
This is where I feel the RM has quality issues with modern matte coins, they are struck with unpolished dies but they are not sand blasted after every strike (I can understand why as this would be very labour intensive and would produce a much lower strike per hour)  This is easy to see where the sandblasting is not 100% consistent and degrades very quickly between strikes and can give the coin what I call a  "dotty"  finish.
Some sovereigns where produced as a matte finish as  specimen coins for the purpose of reference photography, as they were easier to photograph without reflecting the light. The 1937 Matte proof for example.
I've also seen satin coins that have a beautiful lustre to the appearance of the coin.  Not produced or referenced as "satin" there are some 1960's Sovereigns with an attractive satin finish to the appearance of the coin, this is possibly due the alloy used, something I'm currently investigating.
    Cheers
    Dave
