10s a gallon in 1963 would have been very expensive.  Less than 5/- around that time. I recall it being around 6/9 in 1969.
Didn't reach 50p until after the oil crisis in 1973.

Its certainly a difficult one for both sides, the RM are a business that makes coins and you can't blame them for producing coins  V's the exhaustion and difficulty of keeping collectors engaged   especially with increasing prices and cost of living and all that.
The bigger issue I see is that kids don't even handle coinage anymore so the interest and the demand for collector coins is likely to be dead within the next two generations.  The 50p craze was a shot in the arm for the industry and it needs something like that again,  the alphabet 10p's could have been a good run but so little was minted for circulation it was impossible to find them in any numbers......I very much doubt anyone found a full set in normal circulation terms.
The recent surveys the RM sent out especially the one asking questions about the sovereigns, alloy colour, privy marks etc etc.   This is the sound of the RM scraping the bottom of the barrel, they know the sovereign is popular world wide for very good reasons, but if they play around with the sovereign too much it will "bastardise" the legacy of the sovereign the chief coin of the world.
Its a fine line to walk collectors want new coins then complain when theres too many,  or they want rarer lower mintage coins only to complain when they have missed the boat and they have sold out,  or even more strange collectors don't want a coin if it doesn't sell out instantly and its available to order for the proceeding 6-7 weeks after launch.
The Royal mint are certainly facing challenges that never existed a few years ago and they are looking down the barrel of having their own Kodak moment as the product they produce (physical currency) is very quickly becoming obsolete.  This only  leaves the bullion and collector side of the business, are these viable businesses without the commercial currency production?
Its not all doom and gloom as theres many options for the RM to still be around well into the 21st century and beyond,  but that's down to the management team, they have to find new ways to engage and attract new younger collectors into the hobby while also keeping their existing client base interested.
After the recent launch of the Great engravers, the Royal Mint has listened to collectors  everyone was asking them to reduce mintages and range and thats what they did, so kudos to the RM for giving people what they were asking for.

I had said at the very beginning that a 1/4 oz gold (bullion or proof) would have been the perfect denomination in terms of price and long term feasibility of collecting and storing a 26-coin series.
The larger sizes just don’t make sense in those terms (cost and storage), nor are they really needed because portraits typically don’t have the level of intricate detail that need larger surface areas to be appreciated.

    Hi @BackyardBullion
I have occasionally looked at the Historic coin section, and have always been left with the feeling that the RM are simply using their reputation to overprice coins. My thoughts are:
    1. Many of the coins are not are not historic.  Some are current issues - so why advertise them as historic, or Trial of the Pyx from very recently?
    2. All of the coins I have looked at are overpriced.  This can get subjective for hammered coins, I accept but I suspect a hammered expert would agree with me.  Good example is a 1957 Gillick advertised as EF for sale for £575.
    3. Confected sets - RM create historic sets and put them in a nice box and mark have spectacular markups.
    4. Prices are more expensive than buying at auction
    5. I don’t have any information on how the RM source coins but I would imagine:
    - High end hammered from auctions / dealers
    - Most Sovs from trade (I bet they don’t buy from an account called “Royal Mint” - I bet they use some sort of intermediary
    - Individuals selling out their coins which are vaulted at the RM
    - Coins that the might hold back from new issues….
I no longer buy from the RM - I don’t like their new issues, detest their sales of Trial Pieces for silly money and their two tier customer experience - those with an account manager and those who have to queue.  I do wonder if account managers are selling confected “sets” of “historic” coins to the unwary.  Who in the future will come to sell and be very disappointed.

Had an email from telecoms company saying my monthly subscription would be doubling and if i wanted to cancel click on the link. Had my details and account number.
Phoned company and they confirmed the email was from them but the facts were incorrect.
They investigated and found it had happened to others. Turns out someone had hacked their system.  To their credit they told me to set up a 2 step verification and change password.

Never trust the number they call from - it’s very easy to spoof using commercially available kit.
I work in a bank and the number of fraud attempts we see on a daily basis is unbelievable. This is the sort of thing we are fighting with at the top end: https://www.asiafinancial.com/video-call-with-deepfakes-costs-uk-firm-25m-in-hong-kong
As technology and AI gets cheaper, everyday people will be getting calls like this from deepfaked relatives & friends etc. Can you imagine the fraud epidemic which is on the way!

All the different versions of G&D used and also the medieval Angels of Michael & the dragon?

That’s pretty much what I had suggested to the RM some years back when they had sent out a survey about the types of ranges we’d like to see. A range of G&D from the beginning of the RM’s history. (The Angel coins would indeed be out of this world!)
I had also suggested resurrecting old coin designs. 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

This is the RM’s prestige series. They have rectified with mintages this time around. They aren’t going to kill this series. There are numerous other iconic coins they can do that would be appealing to majority of collectors worldwide who’ll never be able to afford the originals.
