My first update of 2024 woop woop 🥳
+100 from my monthly standing order+8 from a monthly dividend
+2 from cashback
+10 from a scratch card win
+20 from cashing in bags of 5p and 20p pieces, amazing how quickly they mount up!
+53 from trading the darts world championship
I've also squirreled away part of my Christmas bonus from work and stuck it in my ISA. My plan being that hopefully in several months time I'll be able to sell these 290 units for a profit, and then add that money to my gold fund 🤞

Not as extreme as having a block put on my account, but I did struggle this weekend to set up a transfer to buy something from on here. Set up a new payee with Halifax and got the automated robot lady phone call where they text you a number and then you key in or speak the code to confirm the details. Keyed in the code, it seemingly didn't pick up the key presses, tried again same thing, tried a third time but used my big boy brain and spoke the code this time...apparently the robot lady couldn't understand my sultry tones and told me to hang up and try again.
Repeated the whole process again - ala the definition of insanity 🙄 - and got the same result. In the end I jumped on Chase and set up the transfer in a matter of minutes. Definitely worth having account with multiple banks, one of them has got to let me spend my money, right?

I'm sure they'd make amazing display pieces and conversation starters but are they worth it?
In the words of Bill Bailey: "only you can answer that". I'd say it depends on why you want to buy, if you're looking for an investment or hedge against inflation etc then probably best to stick to plain ol' bullion. In order to get your money back, or even make a profit you'd be relying on someone liking the coin for it's aesthetic qualities as much as you do/did. It might take several days or weeks to find a buyer willing to pay a price you'd be happy with.
On the other hand, if you're buying as a curio, or objet d'art; something that will sit on your desk where you will see it everyday and bring you pleasure then yeah it probably is worth it - after all you can't put a price on happiness!
Really depends on how you look at it - for examle is going out for a meal at a fancy restaurant worth it? From a purely sustenance point of view then no, not really. You can buy a kilo of rice or spuds and cook them up at home for pennies and you will be nurished and satiated. But going to a swanky restaurent is more than just paying through the nose for a tiny amount of food on a massive plate, it's about the experience, it's a talking point, a memory, an excuse to spend a couple of hours in pleasant surroundings with friends or family. Are those things worth the price? Absolutely. -

Are you Terry Pratchett?
All I will say is, we were never seen in the same room at the same time. Make of that what you will....

Absolutely crackers. Trying to squeeze the granularity of a 70 point scale into a 10 point scale doesn't sound like a great idea. Surely that would lead to massive differences between coins that are supposedly in the same grade? And having one scale supplement the other seems even dafter.
I can only hope they were preparing this email ready for 1st April and got a little excited and clicked the send button too early.

Coin collectors: The numbers all go to seventy. Look, right across the board, seventy, seventy, seventy and...
NGCX: Oh, I see. And most grading scales go up to ten?
Coin collectors: Exactly.
NGCX: Does that mean it's better? Is it any better?
Coin collectors: Well, it's sixty better, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be happy at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your collectable. Where can you go from there? Where?
NGCX: I don't know.
Coin collectors: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?
NGCX: Put it up to seventy.
Coin collectors: Seventy. Exactly. Sixty better.
NGCX: Why don't you just make ten better and make ten be the top number and make that a little better?
Coin collectors: [pause] These go to seventy.

Got my order in with a geezer from Blackpool!
Initially joined RM queue at 9am and suprisingly only 4.5k-ish folk in front. Was expecting a much higher number, so either I got somewhat lucky with the rng and/or the Tuesday launch threw people off and/or no one is really that fussed for an extra expense so close to Christmas.
Lost my nerve with the RM website though before getting in, heard too many horror stories about the site coming unstuck and that's a hassle I don't need so binned them off and headed to Chards.
