frugalman reacted to CollectorNo1 in Worst coins for milk spotting
No silver coins will be free of possible milkspotting..but the Perth mint coins seem to have lesser spotting than most silver coins..their quality control is No:1 in my opinion....Canadian Maples from 2018 onwards have introduced their mintshield protection tech which seems to be reducing spotting significantly....wish they would share their secret with the Royal mint..(No chance) but I believe the RM could invest in their own technology and research and incorporate a mintshield process to improve their coins.....but they won't invest the money and continue to pump out coins with problems...imo they really don't care about their QC, as long as people continue to buy their products with high premiums knowing that we are willing to continue receiving coins that are sent out with spotting scrapes, dents etc....and that we are continually sending back time and time again to be replaced or refunded....We get generic replies and pathetic excuses all the time from the RM! .....why would they invest in technology to eradicate spotting etc, Its going to cost them money..
Until the day when we all say..enough is enough they might listen. But that day will never come because we all continue to buy knowing its a 50/50% chance we will receive a coin in proof condition.
It's like queuing...the English moan about queuing but do not speak out.... and just accept it, its not cricket......😆😆😆😆😆😆

Spotted or not, basic common bullion coins are priced with quite a spread depending on where they are sold, when and the last minute ( eBay panic buyers - sometimes but not always ).
Usually a clean coin will attract a slightly higher price than a marked one but not always; maybe within the difference between 1st and 2nd class postage.
As for special edition and proofs - personally I wouldn't want to pay anything much over regular bullion, so yes the premium can be lost forever.
I had multiple collections of proof Canadian fine silver coins, all certified with fancy box etc., but ended up selling for scrap.
Originally I planned to hold for a long time believing a later generation would see the rarity and history but once the spots appeared that killed it for me.
I now avoid all proof premium silver coins for this very reason.
Trying to remove milkiness with an eraser - impossible to avoid surface damage and fine scratches that will show up but who cares if it is just common bullion ?
A dull, stained Maple or Phillie is an eyesore and is really only worth its weight at spot to a dealer so give it a buff and at least have it looking "precious", nice and shiny !
I have cleaned milk stains by re-polishing the surface using jewellers rouge and a Dremel but if the coin is not highly polished to start with - i.e. a satin finish you will change its appearance which would be very noticeable.
Anything numi or semi numi LEAVE WELL ALONE if you are contemplating selling at a later date as it could loose a lot of its premium if touched.

Sorting my coins during the weekend, and took a picture of 1933 Halfcrown and Wreath Crown in my collection. Same opinion as Liam, halfcrown is a good looking piece.

I can see what you mean, maybe it is a production error on all of them. As far as rough handling goes though a sealed tube from the mint doesn't mean they weren't knocked about before going into the tubes. As long as they come out at weight and have been struck it seems that's all the RM care about with most bullion. I imagine they're shimmied, shuffled and bounced about into their runners 🤪

Thanks Jvw I'ts a great place and I'm slowly finding my way around.
We could have sent theBrits back but decided to keep them for the novelty. There a bit crazy looking but from a reliable source lol. I have 25, be interesting to hear of any others out there. Correct size and weight. with a slight oval of less than a mil showing up on my calipers.

Hello! Welcome to the forum 🤗
An interesting error coin. Not one I've seen before. The QC obviously was asleep on the job. 😂
In 2014, there were quite a few 'mule' Britannias minted. A wrong die was used and the coins were released onto the market. They were for a while sought after with added premium. But not sure if yours will attract the same attention though 😅

Hi forum members. I've had an interest in numismatic coins and precious metals (mainly antique silver) for many years. Buying from jumbles, car boot sales, junk shops when i could, then from ebay when it came along.
I have been into bullion stacking since about 2014 because I liked the idea of owning some of the .999 silver content Britannia's ready for a "sure thing" mega return after the horrendous price plummet of the time (having been unaware of their existence in 2013).
Still stacking So filling some of my time with some like minded people, and perhaps doing some trade or deals sometime in the future.
Take a quick look at this new 2022 Brit. that escaped R.M. quality control. Great detailed strike but Its so off center struck it has completely ruined the milled edge. I know that its only bullion but Its practically an error/reject. If I didn't know what I was looking at I would think it to be a bit iffy. Hope they get their act together soon.
Thank you for letting me join,
Much love, F.

Yes, its a great feeling and knowing that its an investment costing nothing at all rather than a pure extravagance is part and parcel for me.
EDIT Shopping restores a sense of control Research has shown that making shopping decisions can help reinforce a sense of personal control over our environment. It can also ease feelings of sadness. ... In this study, those who actually purchased items were also three times less sad, when compared to those who only browsed.
I'll go along with that one from google lol

average cost pricing, like anything if you hold it long enough it will pay off eventually.

For those of you who might not use silver cutlery and flatware at home, the tarnishing effect of egg yolk on silver is well known.
It is not oxidation as many online sources mistakenly state. The tarnishing is mainly due to a high sulphur content in egg yolk. This is almost certainly the source of the "bad eggs" smell, from hydrogen sulphide or other sulphides in human "emissions" after eating eggs. 😎
We recentlt photographed some silver Britannias with natural toning:
The 2013 above was quite pleasantly toned.
Which is more than can be said for some of the others.

frugalman reacted to TeaTime in Remember the £20 ; £50 and £100 Royal Mint Coins sold as Legal Tender ?
I bought a couple of the £50 coins because i liked the design (probably the most sought after Britannia design in recent memory). I fell for the £50 for £50 lie too - but here's the thing, at £50 for a one ounce BU coin, it's cheaper than what the RM charge for other BU Britannias...
On the one hand it was a rip-off and on the other it was a bargain. I'm hoping it's a sleeper due to the design of the coin and the controversy around it.

frugalman reacted to LawrenceChard in How do the various mints from around the world actually make coins, rounds and bars from scratch?
Most mints issue reports including their mintage figures, although in recent years, some mints seem to be delaying or avoiding publishing these figures.
Our own British Royal Mint used to issue an annual report, which I used to read. Each report included mintage figures for UK coins for the most recent year. It appear to have stopped publishing mintage figures for many coins, but bullion ones in particular, because of concerns about market intelligence and competition.
Proof coins should not be affected, but I think the publication of their mintage figures has also been delayed.
I believe some people have submitted Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, and you may find some of the answers online.
Publishers of coin magazines and books used to publish mintage figures, but they are affected by the above considerations.
