    Me for one.
I've just dumped some shares and will be dribbling the proceeds into bullion sovs over the next few months. None of this mega money limited edition malarkey!
    At hopefully sensible premiums.... 🙄

2023 bullion sovereign was confirmed but no date given.
Expect it will be the G&D design, but given its a special year they may well go with a special design, or both, why not people will pick up both issues!

Bit like photography. In my old club some people babied their cameras and almost afraid to use them in fear of getting them scratched, whatever. The people who got the most from photography were the ones with bashed up and worn cameras. No point putting things on pedestals. they'll degrade up there just as easily as down here.

I don’t like certifying coins and locking them in slabs.
My Mk1 eyeball and research is not fun and valuable to me - and I have seen coins over graded to my eye anyway.
My outrageous forecast: In 100 years I suspect PF70 modern issues will be worth more in their original boxes than slabbed.

Colour wise I prefer older to newer Sovs. But I prefer 999 to Sovs.
Colour doesn't stop me buying, but if a nice shiny older Sov was up for the same price as a rosy red one then I'd likely go old.

MonkeysUncle reacted to Silverlocks in Bullion sovereign condition - George V
On the G&D device, wear tends to show on the visor on George's helmet, the reins on the horse and the dragon's chest.  There's not a lot of visible wear here.  I'd say this was EF, as there isn't much wear - but the coin is not uncirculated.  If the coin was worn to the VF level (actually quite unlikely to happen on a George V sov) you would expect to see flattened spots on the dragon's chest, and his helmet visor, and the reins on the horse's neck worn away.  The example below shows what a G&D reverse looks like with more wear.
On the obverse, you get wear on the highlights of Georges hair (the original finish will wear off this), and wear on the end of George's 'tache and his ears.  I'd characterise this coin as EF, as there is only slight wear; indeed the EF example in Allen has more wear than this.  If it was worn to VF you'd expect to see flattening on the ear and moustache, and much of the detail worn off his hair.
The handling marks would be non-grading damage at this level.  There are no major edge knocks or marks on the sensitive areas (bust or fields) of the coin.  I'd characterise this as EF.  Not a particularly good EF, but really no less than that.  It's not especially good condition by George V standards - I'd say EF is about par for the course on pre-war Georges - but it's not in really bad condition either.
Other designs show wear in different places.
I suggest you get hold of a copy of Allen's Grading British Coins.  This has photos of all the major obverse and reverse designs on British coins in various grades, and discusses the wear patterns.

Here's another photo, this time of a jubilee vic, that shows wear on the original mint finish.  Because of the angle of the lighting, the bright patches are where the original satin finish on the coin remains, and the darker patches are the highlights of where it wears off.

This rather ghostly number shows the same thing on a George V sovereign with some of the original finish remaining.

I really like the modern copper sovereign. It's still nearly a quarter ounce of gold, costs as much as the monthly grocery bill, and when I can afford one, I feel I'm doing good things instead of wasting my money on frivolities like Sky tv, magazines and takeaways.  I even like the Charlie portrait and if you shop around, they're cheaper than a Gillick.

It could still be a financial reason.... Whilst they'd only need a couple of parts silver and could still include mostly copper in the non gold portion, maybe they think rose gold or whatever these recent ones are are the future...
Perhaps they feel a need to make the sovs different enough from other bullion coins like their own Britannia to be able to shift those at higher premiums...
Quite a lot of other possibilities too.
Haven't got many photos to hand but here's one from a recent delivery... A random spread of various years. The older ones are definitely my preference
