Which 2023 Britannia Are You Backing ?

Recommended Posts

My 2023 Britannia arrived today with King Charles on the obverse.
I also have the 2023 Britannia with our former Queen.

So fellow stackers which coin of the two are you predicting will be the more sought after in a few years ?
(a) the very last Brit struck with Queen Elizabeth, or
(b) the first with King Charles ?

My apologies for the image quality taken in dull conditions under a desk lamp.

Both nice, try doing a royal mint special .. put them both in a nice box and sell the two as ‘special last and first’ coins?🤔🤔 make a fortune!

It's significant that both coins share the same date.

Best as a pair methinks.

First dates tend to be more premium heavy than last dates I think? At least going off some monarchs in sovs.

As others have mentioned it's an interesting pair. I don't really think they'll have a massive premium appreciation in bullion forms but it's a significant pairing non the less

I always though this pair would be numismatically interesting as I'm pretty sure there is no other 2023 coin that bears the exact same reverse but with different monarchs on it.

So to me, the pair will always be more interesting than either individual coin. So much so, that I even bought a 2-coin Lighthouse case and some quadrum capsules in anticipation of buying both.

(so also, imagine my surprise when I later saw this! 🤣 https://www.bleyerbullion.co.uk/shop/silver/silver-britannia-2-coin-set-2023/)

First or last I think is a wash.

What might be a factor regarding whichever might command a higher premium in the future is how long they will make them for with KCIII on them.

There are what 26 years worth of silver Britannia coins with QEII on them? King Charles is already in his mid 70's who knows if he will still be sitting on the throne or even be alive in 26 years or even 15 years or 10?

Maybe The Royal Mint will discontinue the silver Britannia coin at some point.

They are not very interesting bullion coins these days, but in the future, if people have any interest in them at all, these will be the ones. They will want both so if there is any significant difference in mintages, the lowest number.

Someone will try for sure but not me as I have a heap of Canadian 6 coin Wildlife Boxes and their coins but selling today would loose me money.

Sounds like some sunk cost fallacy. If you would not, today, buy something for as much as you could get from selling it (after postage etc) then logically you should probably sell and the amount you bought it for shouldn't affect the decision.

You might manage some regret avoidance if they do rise in value but I've seen people stay in investments "until they get their money back" while missing out on much better investment options.

Personally I think that the last QEII coin would be more sought after in future than the first KCIII coin.  But I think the difference would be fairly minimal, and I agree that owning the pair would be more sought after.

Either way, both gorgeous coins, so I bought a couple rolls of each just to have for the collection. I’m looking forward to the King on some kind of new 10oz coin hopefully soon. As for value, I have generic rounds and bars for resale. The sovereigns are too nice to not keep around and pass on to the grandkids.

For the sake of public decency it might be best to discontinue the coins after Charles passes and William ascends the throne. I am not going to ask for a one ounce Willie.

I think the RM are more likely to discontinue the coin than actually improving the quality of them. 🤣 As far as the production process goes!

Lizzy or Charlie Boy - I don’t really have a preference. Brits will always be lovely coins to own.

Just out of interest, will not the E11R version be “rarer”, as not as many will have been minted, by the end of 2023, surely the lions share will be C111R.

I don't think they mint them up to the end of the year, though. Won't production cease and then the 2024 coins come out from Sep/Oct-ish?

Yes, the QEII 2023 Brits will have been mid-Oct 22 to mid-Jan 23, so three months of production. Then the Charles III Brits were mid-Jan 23 and should go to September-ish so around 8 months. So the QEII's will certainly have had a shorter production run, but will still have been minted in the hundreds of thousands if not millions (for silver at least), so 'rarer' would certainly be a relative term.

Disclosure - I work in the precious metals industry, however this is my personal account and all opinions are my own.
