This is a common misconception about silver, many invest in silver to keep their wealth, not grow it.
Remember, you haven't lost anything until you cash out, so if you can afford to hold it, do so until the time is right, one day silver will be worth more than you paid for it, whether that same money would be worth even more than that if it had been invested in something else is anyone's guess.

My first ever metal pour. Got some lead lying around so melted it using an old frying pan, garden fire and blow torch. Turned out quite nice. Fire wasn't great so I'll be buying a dedicated Propane burner for the rest of the lead.

Another $1.9trillion more dollar magic fiat funny money printed into existence in the land of talking mice, morbid obesity & mass school shootings
Now this is likely to continue every few months !!!
Let that sink in where we will be if this continues, which in all likelihood it will have to
Keep calm and carry on stacking

"I've been buying gold for a number of years now"
If you ask yourself why, it may answer some of the other questions.
"due to rates on fiat currency being so low."
I don't understand what you mean, interest rates?
"I've seen gold go from around £950 up to a high of around £1,560 within the last 2 or 3 years."
Sure, and dropped back down to about £1230 currently. As people were stampeding to buy at £1500 to £1600, it sounds relatively cheap.
"Isn't it only a metal and nothing more?"
No, it can be a liquid above 1064.18 °C, and a gas at above 2970 °C.
    What else do you want?
"Can you only make jewellery and coins from it?"
    No, read https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold
    "Why is it so precious?"
    See #1
Most of the other 7 billion people probably think the same.
Remember, there are only 2 metallic elements which are not grey coloured, one is copper, the other is gold.
When you say "precious", do you mean "valuable"? Supply and demand.
"Why are banks buying it up in vast quantities?"
    Are they?
"Why is there a world gold council?"
    Why not?

I noticed you had "world" in bold. I guess that Scunthorpe Gold Council doesn't sound as impressive. 🙂
Now, who wants to know about the meaning of life?

After missing out on a 3G like many others, and waiting for what seems like forever on a half sov from Atkinsons, I picked up this Virtues coin from Silvertrader. First in a series of 6 I believe.

I think it is stunning. Must say I'm a fan of the EIC artwork, some of their coins are really underrated IMO. Such as...

Great quality for bullion, no spotting on any of mine. Looking forward to the next 5 Virtues.

Always was very interesting the reaction of investors when are this type of fluctuations of spot gold price. More pandemic than a virus is the panic.
But what are doing now the biggest National Banks all around the world? They are selling? Definitely not. They are buying, especially when is expected a  storm of crisis, to consolidate their currencies when necessary.
I will do the same. I am not rich, I will never be, but I will preserve my wealth, avoiding to became in the future an old pauper.
I will enjoy buying any kind of gold, laughing when I am buying this month more gold with the same money comparing to last month.
    Cheers!
    Stefan.

Gold is forever wealth as belangp says. Your ozs haven’t dropped just the currency value linked to it (which in reality is not really linked).
Its a store of value a commodity. It does what they say it does. Be grateful you have it, most people don’t....

This is TLT (30 year US bonds) and Gold
If bond yields continue to go up expect gold to come down
I wouldn't be shocked if it comes down another 5-10% in the next few months but who knows, will depend on the new normal - how well the vaccines seem to work and how optimistic people are on global economy recovery
I personally think at some point this year an event will happen or a signal will appear that things aren't going to get back on track and that's when gold will kick on but who knows

to be fair to BBP have sometimes had the bad wrap for being the dearest UK dealer out there - however their prices for 'common bullion' items isnt as high as it was in days gone by, they are still not the cheapest but not a million miles away.  Their site, dispatch times, service and reputation is very good cant fault them on that

    Another mysterious drop.
so with physical silver sold out everywhere, even with dealers charging premiums of 30-40%, how is SLV picking up massive amounts of silver at no premium, and on the same day? There's hardly any silver left in the london vaults as per the bullionstar article - the ETFs have bought it all without impacting the silver price much (and possibly further facilitating its unexplainable drops)
surely it would have to pay some premiums like the rest of us, at least some of the time? This would affect the profit and loss of the ETF vehicle. If it was able to get silver with 0% premiums, then the ETF itself would be trading on a premium to net asset value.
they may be pretending to buy silver, but at least they are not cheeky enough to add phantom premiums too.

ps - slight problem - SLV, the biggest silver ETF almost certainly doesn't have all the silver it claims to have.
