GoldStatue reacted to TheShinyStuff in 2022 Sovereign design revealed?
I'm still not sure how a new sovereign coin, with the new sovereign's portrait and a new reverse can be considered a 'memorial'. Surely the fact of the matter is that it is the first Charles III sovereign coin. End of.

Ahh this is nice. No precious metal, but better than that: 23 of the coins inside it are chocolate.

GoldStatue reacted to LawrenceChard in 2022 Memorial Sovereign Alloy Change / Yellow Gold?
The 22ct gold the Mint uses is not only used for sovereigns, but for other gold proof coins, such as fifty pences, gold proof crowns, and some others. Precious Metals are not sourced directly through the LBMA, but through its members, with some possible non-members.
Gold for commercial and industrial use is usually refined into fine gold, typically 9999 fine, before being alloyed to its required fineness.
I have no special knowledge of the Royal Mint's purchasing policies for gold, but I believe it sources many of its "blanks" from third party suppliers. At this stage, the RM could presumably specify the alloy it desired. My belief, stated many times, is that at some point during QEII's reign, someone in the production department of the Mint wrongly assumed that being 22cat was sufficient, and that red gold alloyed only with copper, was perfectly acceptable, and probably a few pence cheaper. He may have believed that gold sovereigns, or crown gold was traditionally red, containing no silver.
It may also be that the original crown gold specifications did not include any any specific mention of silver, as almost all gold bullion available at the time would have contained a proportion of silver as an impurity, and was rarely, if ever fully or further refined to eliminate it, possibly because it was also known to help produce pleasantly yellow coloured alloys with good working properties.
At every possible opportunity I remind Royal Mint management of the above. I am sure some still do not know, others probably don't care, while the few who are aware may encounter similar resistance or inertia to that which I observe.

GoldStatue reacted to dicker in Has the royal mint turned the corner?
I don’t think so.
Personally, I don’t see the beauty or value in coins pumped out by the RM.
Where they produce hits they are re hashes of previous brilliance (Wyon for example)
I might be being controversial, but I far prefer earlier Sovereigns and coins from gold rush Australia and America.
I feel the RM is too commercial, and not driven by artisans.

Yes, just the same design as this one but they've changed the crown the lion is wearing over to Charles one, put up the price of the 1 sov by £100 and increased the mintage by 70%.
Any takers? 😀

GoldStatue reacted to AndrewSL76 in 2022 Sovereign design revealed?
We probably need to treat these figures carefully as this is generated by the RM systems to control stock that they have. There will be plenty of coins with dealers etc. that should also be taken from the numbers classes as sold - not all will have sold yet.
For example, with the full sovereign it is recorded that the Mint have 4281 which is calculated as meaning 13219 have sold. Some of those 13219 won’t yet have sold and will be sat in dealer stock.

£25 million in sales in less than 24 hours! even @arshimo2012 can't match that here with his always reasonable / forever flying out prices

GoldStatue reacted to Shinus73 in Is Graded gold worth acquiring?
My approach to silver and gold has evolved over the years.
I started out as a stacker of the cheapest possible bullion (coins mostly) and was initially entirely disinterested in proof coins.
I now mostly stack / collect graded proof 1/4 oz gold, sovereigns etc, although my silver purchases still include a lot of 10 oz bars and junk silver.
Some observations for graded coins (in the UK):
Stick to Royal Mint coins, despite the frequent problems - many people will fawn over your lovely Libertads, but nobody will pay what you want for them.
Never pay RRP for proof gold 1/4 oz coins from the Mint - wait a couple of years and you will pick up the same coin (graded) for significantly less.
Always pay RRP for special design Sovereigns from the Mint - wait a couple of years and you will pick up the same coin (graded) for significantly more.
Silver - unless you get a PF70, the best you will do is get your money back.
Stop buying and grading proof silver coins (this is a message I really should listen to, but won’t).

Different privy every year just to troll those completionists 😀
I'm still in shock that you can get the five coin set from the Royal Mint (76 still available) and Chards, how that didn't sell out in 15mins flat is difficult to comprehend!

Can't we call them Lassies or even (for the younger generation) Teletubbies?
I am guessing Mr Noseybonks may be too obscure (?)

The mintages are so high for the 1 sov you'd expect that to be one half of the set.
