Get an Early Night Ready for the Royal Mint Queue in the Morning

When the new:

2022 Charles III QEII Memorial Proof Gold Sovereign Issues Go on Sale

at 9.00 GMT

Interesting thoughts include:

How long will the queue get, both in numbers and in waiting time.

How many TSF posts will there be about whether to refresh the page (no), use multiple devices (possibly), try to guess actual product URLs (possibly).

How many more TSF posts about thether their order has been accepted, and a host of similar questions.

How many people will buy elsewhere while they are waiting.

How many of these will buy from Chards.

It should be another interesting day!

I have a long history of NOT buying anything directly from the rm due to the host of problems i myself and countless other face when doing this.

BUT

Even for the rm I feel this is a blatant money grabbing exercise using the death of QEII is vulgar, offensive and tactless at the very least.

I for sure won't be buying any even on the secondary market!

I know for most it will just be another sovereign to collect or flip.

Sorry @LawrenceChard but this is my interesting thought!

That is an interesting viewpoint, and one I had not anticipated.

Yes, the cynical part of me agrees that this is the RM cashing in, but then I do realise that there will be many people who will want to acquire a souvenir / memento, and that it is part of the Royal Mint's function to provide the public, and collectors with appropriate high quality official products to cater for that demand. Also gold sovereign collectors will want one in their collection.

On an almost daily basis, we buy in secondary market modern issue coins, and there are many issues which I don't really want to buy, such as TDC issues, almost anything marketedby LMO and others. It is not only me who thinks this way. Quite often our staff despair at the amount of money people have spent in overpriced, overhyped, junk; often purchased without any knowledge or real interest in coins. Sometime the sellers realise they are facing a big loss. Despite not really wanting to buy this stuff, we pay a fair price for it, and then often have to invest considerable time and resource into re-selling it. Some of the coin designs are attractive, but not issued by the UK, and for this reason are not in great demand. As we are Blackpool, not the west end of London, I have always taken the view that we cannot afford to pick and choose which coins we buy. This pragmatic approach has worked well over the years.

So, if someone offers you one of these sovereigns at intrinsic value in a few years time, do buy it, we would always take it off your hands.

I thought you said you were embargoed until 9 am tomorrow!🤐

Yes, but we have been having some discussions with the RM about what can and can't be mentioned. We have been and still are seeking clarification on a number of points. Some may have to wait. I will not go into great detail, for once!

In any case, you are supposed to be having an early night.

So am I!
