Is it just me or can I find another like this on the entire web. Driving me nuts

Seems a good deduction. An image search for Sterling silver perfume bottle shows similar items although not one exactly the same.

The top looks like it's on a hinge so an inkwell is more likely as scent bottle lids would probably lift off.

This is a scent bottle from 1873. This is a little 'un - yours seems to be a bit bigger.

Do you have a clearer photo of the hallmarks? - my guess would be that your scent bottle is a Birmingham item - so there will be an anchor on it.
My guess would also be that it is a 1901 piece - there is a year letter 'b'

It's usual for scent bottles to have a hinged lid, along with an inner glass stopper used for dabbing the perfume on with.
If we're ever going to solve this we need to know what's under that lid, and what size it is.
I'm still going for a scent bottle, It looks too deep for an inkwell (unless it's very small)

Edit:  @sixgun posted at the same time - see his picture above. Has yours got a stopper like this?

Most scent bottles I have seen tended to be tubular in shape. That container is more chunky, more masculine if that makes sense. Hence the size question which seems to confirm that most of us have minds suitable only for the gutter 🙂

I have a big camera and a little lens according to my partner.
