2022 Platinum Jubilee 50p

https://www.royalmint.com/our-coins/events/the-queens-platinum-jubilee/

On 6 February 2022, Her Majesty The Queen will become the first British monarch to reach a Platinum Jubilee. The celebrations will begin with the FIRST UK 50p coin issued by The Royal Mint to mark a royal event. A commemorative Platinum Jubilee portrait features as a unique obverse on the coin, specially created for this unique moment.

In 1977, The Royal Mint marked Her Majesty The Queen’s Silver Jubilee with a coin that found its way into countless memory boxes. The coin was the prime memento of the occasion and came to symbolise the national mood of celebration and togetherness, the street parties and bunting, and the time spent with family and friends.

In 2002, we struck coins for The Queen’s Golden Jubilee as the United Kingdom revelled once more and there can be no forgetting the sights and sounds of 2012 – the year of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, which saw the public paint the town red, white and blue throughout the summer. We can now announce that we look forward to marking The Queen’s unprecedented Platinum Jubilee in 2022, striking coins for our monarch and our country just as we have for more than a thousand years.

Reaching a Platinum Jubilee is an unrivalled achievement for Her Majesty and it is a milestone that is unlikely to be seen again for generations to come.
The Royal Mint has been tasked with creating one of our largest coin collections to date for this significant occasion, which requires the skills of the most experienced coinage artists, engravers and craftspeople.

I found the proclamation.

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/notice/3892780

This seems to be the portrait description:

———————————

DESIGNS OF THE COINS

6. The design of the said fifty pence gold, standard silver, silver piedfort, platinum and cupro-nickel coins shall be either:

(a) ‘For the obverse impression Our effigy on horseback with the inscription “· ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 50 PENCE ·” accompanied by the Garter Belt with the inscription “· HONI · SOIT · QUI · MAL · Y · PENSE ·” and the date of the year, and for the reverse the number 70 and Our Royal Cypher surrounded with the dates “1952-2022”;

———————————

It’ll be interesting to see this portrait of HM on horseback. 🙂

The 2002 Golden Jubilee £5 had a Lizzy on horseback, will be interesting to see if there are any comparisons to that coin ?

It does seem strange to depict a 95 year old on horseback - was it designed by Prince Charles???

The Royal Mint is initiating a special programme to celebrate, including a 50 pence coin with a royal theme for the first time, and coins with a new effigy. This new Sovereign is the first.

……and coins with a new effigy…..so separate from the 50p….?

Yes, they’ve announced a range of coins with this effigy of QE II on horseback, besides the SotD 50p.

Ah, cheers for that. Do not think that is my bag but will be watching for the release anyway to see the design.

Same here.  The Sovereign is really the only coin that does it for me.

Besides the Sovereign, the Great Engravers, and the Queen’s Beasts, most other offerings feel either gimmicky or obligatory to meet annual profit margins.

The Tudor Beasts is close up there for me alongside the “big 3” but we’ll have to see what the rest of the coins look like.

I have a sizeable GP 50p collection, I’ve not bought many of late, as I’ve had to streamline my collection, if this is a one-off portrait it will fly out of the mint.

They milked the decimal day 50p too much, 3 GP variants to my knowledge was too much.

Counting Down to the Platinum Jubilee

As the nation looks forward to Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, we’re delighted to give you a glimpse into our specially created Platinum Jubilee collection, as we unveil the first UK 50p coin to celebrate a royal event. The coin’s obverse features a commemorative portrait of The Queen and the reverse features the number 70, including The Queen’s cypher framed within the ‘0’, at the heart of the design, which represents the length of The Queen’s reign.

We’ll soon reveal two more beautifully decorative  designs, including a crowned depiction of the Royal Arms accompanied by the years 1952 and 2022. Another regal design will appear on a number of the premium coins in the collection through a crowned depiction of the Royal Cypher surrounded by the floral emblems of the United Kingdom. These coins also feature a special jubilee portrait on the obverse.

The Royal Mint has unveiled the design of a new 50p which will be issued in 2022 to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. It is the first time that a royal event has been celebrated on the tails side of a fifty pence, with a design that has been personally approved by the Queen.

Trusted by monarchs for 1,100 years, The Royal Mint has struck circulating coins for the Queen throughout her reign and celebrated royal milestones, including the Silver, Gold and Diamond Jubilees, on a collection of commemorative crown pieces. The unique Platinum Jubilee 50p is a fitting tribute to a remarkable reign and will be available as a collectable coin in early 2022.

Marking 70 days to go until the anniversary of the Queen’s accession to the throne in 1952, The Royal Mint has unveiled imagery of the new design. The coin will feature the number 70, representing the number of years on the throne, and the Queen’s cypher framed within the zero, at the heart of the design.

Clare Maclennan, Divisional Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint, said:

“The Royal Mint has a proud history of striking coins for British monarchs and 2022 sees one of the greatest celebrations of Her Majesty the Queen with the upcoming Platinum Jubilee.

“Marking 70 days until the anniversary of the Queen’s Accession to the throne, The Royal Mint is delighted to reveal the commemorative Platinum Jubilee 50p design ahead of its launch in the new year.

“In recognition of the landmark occasion, this is the first time a royal milestone has been commemorated on a 50p coin and is a fitting celebration for Britain’s longest reigning monarch.”

New and current collectors can register their interest now for the Platinum Jubilee 50p, which will feature a special commemorative obverse design, at The Royal Mint.

The bespoke Platinum Jubilee obverse will be unveiled in 2022 across one of the largest collections made by The Royal Mint, which will also include a commemorative £5 crown.

ENDS

One interesting bit says:
"Marking 70 days to go until the anniversary of the Queen’s accession to the throne in 1952..."

I checkedthe dates, and the Press Release was issued on Sunday 28th November 2021. The Queen acceeded to the throne on 6th February 1952, so Sunday 6th February 2022 will be the 70th anniversary.

The RM also say they are starting a countdown. Does this mean that they will announce a new Platinum Jubilee commemorative coin every 10 days for the next 9 or 10 weeks?
