The Beauty of gold through the ages

Yes, I agree.  In some ways, sitting at the bottom of the ocean protects gold artefacts from human damage.  All too often stunning artefacts were simply melted.

Love this, thanks for sharing.

Imagine finding that on a dive, what a buzz! It almost doesn’t look legit it’s so well preserved. Amazing...

Treasure hunting appeals to my inner child... I’ve just recently finished listening to the story of Oak Island https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.5573186

Such an unbelievable story, yet true.

The amount of treasures sank during the days of adventure and exploration on the high seas... Haven’t we mapped out more of the moon than our own ocean beds? Imagine the discoveries yet to be found!

Many thanks, Elliot

  • 1 year later...

It is often toward new year that we hear of some of the best treasure discoveries in the UK from the Portable Antiquities Scheme.  I haven’t seen anything in the press but know there have been many many finds this year.  Hopefully we will see a press release!

I was in Bath a few years ago, before i owned an oz of gold. There was a “gold” exhibition on at the museum and some of the peices were thousands of years old. Some a absolutely mind blowing artifacts were there.

Found a picture i took:

Hi All

At the risk of boring you, I am going to post on this thread articles and photos that reflect on the beauty and value of gold through the ages.

I am particularly interested in treasure wreck gold finds because the artefacts recovered are so frequently discovered in mint state despite being in the sea for hundreds of years.

To start, I thought it would work to post a link to the 1715 fleet society which documents the remarkable find of the below bird on the Florida “treasure coast”.   This find is all the more remarkable because eventually both wings were found.

Thanks for posting this, quite amazing to see lost and forgotten gold treasures re-discovered!  Certainly would be worthwhile to visit a museum (where ever it lands) to see this in person.  Quick question if you know the answer, was the gold pelican pure gold, or was it gold plated?    Just curious.
